You cannot send email to forum members who haven't entered an email address. And those who have entered an email address are not spammed because the email is not public. The only effect is that you see an email button. "Always show my e-mail address" doesn't mean that the email is shown actually, this is just phpBB nonsense.

Moderators without email buttons are evil and not trustworthy. Well, normal members without email contact aren't as well. ;)

What do you mean? For example, I have entered my E-mail address in the profile settings (it's required!), but the "E-mail" button is turned off in my posts...

You want to say that the Profile option Always show my e-mail address does not show my E-mail address to the public, but simply allows other members to write me via the forum?

<EDIT>
Well, it really seems to be so. Why this phrase is used in this case? It does absolutely different thing than it tells about... Bad translators among phpBB authors? :)

What an eye!

In some of the forums there is a similar setting - and it really shows the E-mail address not only to the forum users, but to all other world. The "E-mail" button in these forums is just a direct link like "mailto:me@domain.com". Of course, I always turn this option off. I thought, it is the same here...

There must be a special MOD in this forum.

Knowing this behavior I used to show my Email-address in several forums, but then I once realized that this means in most of the forums that a click at the email button indeed reveals my email address.

Yes, I changed PhpBB myself to show an e-mail button isntead of the e-mail address, just to protect users from spammers...

I have changed the wording in the user profile to:
"Allow others to send me an e-mail (address is hidden)".

This should make it more clear.

Suggestion:
  • 9. All moderators must have the option "Allow others to send me an e-mail (address is hidden)" in their profiles set to Yes.
The following moderators have this option set to No:
Sam_Zen
Kees Weijsenfeld
Darkman
Unjoanqualsevol
Sombra

[mod]
Please refrain to repeat your proposal again. The moderators have taken note of it and it will be considered.

Is that for sure? I have a phpBB forum myself - and without any modification it only shows a button, not the email address.

However - if the sender checks the box marked "Send a copy of this e-mail to yourself" then the email address of the recipient is revealed in the recieved email :!:

Two separate mails are sent, one to the recipient and one to yourself. What is revealed? Please post the headers.
