Checksum Verify -> Result can't be copied/exported? / + General Backup Thoughts

Post by *SnakeSnoke » 2018-08-12, 07:45 UTC

Hi all,

After the verify process with a checksum file there is a log window by TC. Sadly it is not possible to save the log or even copy the entries to clipboard. If you are checking a lot of files (and have many errors), this is unhandily.

Background: I use TC to 'backup' my files regularly by using the sync function. Now I have discovered that some files are broken, even though total commander didn't detect any change (since I don't compare by content, because it would need too much time scanning all folders). I am thinking about creating checksum files and check my files regularly. I have to find a way to ensure I don't copy/backup/overwrite corrupt files while keeping everything fast, hm ... I exchange my external hard disk every ~3 years with a new one and copy from scratch. Therefore I would end up with more and more corrupt files. This bothers me a lot at the moment. Finding a fast sync/backup process while automatically creating new checksums for new files would be great, but how to ensure which side is correct? That's the problem for the program/me ...
I might have to change my folder structure to files which basically doesn't change so often, create checksum files and check them regularly and only sync files and folders which change often.

You can highlight the content of the log window with the mouse and copy it to clipboard with Ctrl+C.

Click on the first line you want to copy, hold down the Shift key and click the last line you want to copy - or click a line, hold down the left mouse button and drag to select more lines.

Well, there could be context menu there with following options:
- Select all
- Copy
- Save position

+1 for the context menu

... but many thanks to petermad for suggesting me that workaround I never thought of :D

I am happy to see getting a small discussion started with my post.
Besides the mentioned context menu I would suggest to extend the update/verify window as well, so you already can see errors, before the entire check is finished.
In my case, scanning all my md5 files can take hours and I would like to see the results immediately. I am already very glad I can search with total commander all md5 files from subdirectories, then “Feed to listbox”, mark all and start the check of all. That’s very easy and the only way, since you can't "queue" md5 files for checking.

It could be another option in context menu: "Show errors only".

Support ++. With the "select all" and copy-paste functions, it would be very convenient.
