Show archive is opened by which plugin somewhere

Post by *dindog »

Like the Lister(xxxx plugin) in the lister.
I've been using a quite old wcx to open ISO file and one day I find it didn't handle UDF format ISO correctly, and then I find my another plugin total7zip support much more archive format than the old ISO wcx by 7z. So I uninstalled the old wcx.

User usually don't know what wcx plugin TC is using to open an archive, unless they recheck the plugin setting corresponse extension, but this will not possible if the archvie is opened by Ctrl+PgUn.(self execute installer, for example..) That make the adjustment of wcx hard.

I think titlebar, the new zip encode display(filename header) and the status bar are some candidates for showing it.

The field "Packer" in the file properties shows you which extension was used. For example I have defined plugin Total7zip to 7z1 and 7zip to 7z2. For the internal, it shows "7zip (dll)".

Not exactly - most times it just shows the file extension. For example I have assigned the extension 7z to be packed with Total7zip - but "Packer:" just shows "7z".
And I have set the extension 7z_7z to up to be packed with 7zip - and here "Packer:" shows "7z_7z".

The user has to remember which extensions that are assigned to which packer - it would be better if TC did that conversion for you so that "Packer:" for 7z files in my case, and 7z1 files in yours, would show "Total7zip". And "Packer:" for 7z_7z files in my case, and 7z2 files in your case, would show "7zip"

Maybe more obvious: for wim files "Packer:" shows "wim" - It would be better if it showed "Total7zip".
For the internal, it shows "7zip (dll)".
That's correct, but for internal rar files (all packer plugins disabled) it shows "rar" and not "rar (dll)" - maybe because rar (dll) is always used - but then that should be always shown.

Indeed, the lack of showing the currently used packer/plugin has been annoying me for years. So support++ for this suggestion.

It would be even better to show both compression type and plugin name, for example: "wim/Total7zip" or wim (Total7zip)".

Unfortunately, "Properties of packed file" dialog doesn't appear for updir ([..]) item, which means Total Commander doesn't offer a way to see information about unpacker used for opening empty archive.

I think adding this is something free improvement, right?
TC always knows which plugin itself is using for opening an archive, just find a place to display it to someone wanted to know, and of course an option for showing it or not would add for who rather prefer remain unknown( personally, I doubt there is anyone will, as we haven't heard anyone complained the plugin name show in the lister is annoying)

I also agree that displaying packer name together with associated extension would be nice, also for internal packers "(internal") would be more descriptive than "(dll").
E.g. "7z (internal)", "rar (internal)", "7z (Total7zip)" etc.

And there should be another way to see packer, it isn't easy to go to a packed file properties to see it.
