TC 9.50 crashes when mouse right clicks on a drive icon.

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

TC 9.50 crashes when mouse right clicks on a drive icon.

Post by *dime »

On Win7x64 SP1. TC 9.50 x64. When I right-click on a drive-box in the upper part of TC, I expect to see the standard Windows context menu that corresponds to that drive. But instead TC crashes. This bug exists in previous versions also, for a long time.

I just found that this crash happens not always. If I right-click on the drive-C first, TC shows the context menu, as expected; and then this works with other drives. If I start TC and right-click on some other drive first (not C), then TC crashes.

I guess you have some bad Context menu extensions installed.
Try to disable the non-Microsoft handlers one by one by using ShellExView from NirSoft
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3374)
TC 11.03 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1371a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.2, Listary Pro 6.3.0.69
QAP 11.6.3.2 x64

It seems you are right. The problem is connected with "AlcoholShellEx64 Class" in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\AxShlEx64.dll". When this extension is disabled, TC works properly. But how can I be sure that the bug is really in that extension, not in TC? In Windows Explorer the context menu works fine. So, is it possible that the bug is in TC?

You're not the first one to encounter this problem with Alcohol's Shell extenstion - there's a report in Total Commander topic on one of Russian forums. User solved it by uninstalling Alcohol and using its portable version instead.

The problem with alcohol seems not to be with the Alcohol DLL's themselves but with AxShlExHlper.exe executable invoked by the DLL,

When this helper is present on W10, even Regsvr32 hangs open and fails to popup the registration failure/success message, the same helper on w7 does not demonstrate these issues.

I suspect one of the code security changes in 10 is the underlying culprit but it is on the authors of alcohol to make their helper compatible.

Whats odd is that Explorer.exe invokes the helper without issue,
