Optical mice
The optical sensor performs best on surfaces with detail to track. It will not function on surfaces without visible detail (such as glass) or surfaces on which it has a reflection (such as mirrors or glossy surfaces). The optical sensor may also have difficulty tracking on highly repetitive patterns (such as printed magazine or newspaper photographs).
That actually means, "buy a good mousepad".

I'm using optical mice since October 2000 at two different locations (office and home) directly on the table without any problem.
Re: Optical mice
Wooden tables sometimes make it hard for optical mice to work. I have a beech-imitation desk and I had to get a mouse pad, otherwise my mouse would go crazy on all the little details.jb wrote:... in the (rare?) case that the surface of your table is not good enough.Hacker wrote:That actually means, "buy a good mousepad". ;)

Bullshit. Second generation optical mice work on transparent surfaces. Well, not very good... Ok, ok, they work much better on not-transparent surfaces. But theoretically... Just never bealive M$ .

Yep, mirrors are not supported. But what for? Someone here has a mirrored table? I do understand a mirror on the bedroom ceiling, but a table... Or I'm not the most perverted one here?

Well, see the first comment. The old (may be even Soviet ) newspaper I found supports my optical mouse. Actually it does now. Well, may be it depends on it's contents... .
Actually the most threat to the subj. is a good old dust on a sensor. But it is not a big problem to clean it .
P.S. Buy it, Jedi! Go-go-go!!! [/face]

norfie - I've bought a new (optical) mouse, because it's better for my work in Photoshop.
And everybody who say optical is better only because you don't need to clean it probably never tried the optical mouse.BTW,i still need to clean four sliding parts, and it's optical mouse (IntelliMouse Optical).Ok,I better clean up my table

Dominik,
you could say "I'm not going to buy new CPU for a years only for speeding up my OS!"
I did not quite get that, mind explaining?

OK, well, what's the advantage then? I admit, I have never tried any for a longer period.
TIA
