Thumbnail cache gets bigger and bigger

Post by *Caponidae »

Hello

I don't know if it's a bug or a misuse on my part, but when I browse a directory with about 1000 photos, each time I go into the directory the cache gets bigger, from day to day the cache gets bigger until it reaches more than 200 meg for 1000 photos ...
I've tried to clean the cache with the built-in function but it doesn't change... it keeps growing.

-The directory that contains the photos is a disk mapped on the network.
- only use the explorer method (ole2) is checked
and the location of the thumbnail cache is customized on the D:\thumb

Thank you.

If this is Windows related:

I googled some and found 2 almost identical websites.

https://pureinfotech.com/delete-network-folder-thumbsdb-windows-10/

https://www.sitepoint.com/switch-off-thumbs-db-in-windows/

If this is Total Commander related, I have no idea.

I cannot reproduce this.

Which file(s) exactly grows - the tcthumbs.idb, tcthumbs.db or tcthumbs.frl ?

The main question is about the filename:

thumbs.db => Microsoft Windows related (not used by TC at all)
tcthumbs.db => TC related

I have a picture tree with about 4500 files, thumbnails are set to 128 x 128.
Scrolling up and down in this large tree the tcthumbs.idb grows to about 41 MB.
After that it stays on this size with no further increments.
So for me there is no problem here with TC.

Hello,
this is both tcthumbs.idb and tcthumbs.db, tcthumbs.frl is not present in the cache folder.

yes I can imagine it must work for other users :-)

but with me the cache keeps growing and moreover the display is done as if the cache was not used.

this is well TCThumb, I also tried generating thumb.db windows and the ole2 option enabled/disabled... but it doesn't change.

tcthumbs.db is a Windows compound document which contains the names and file details of the thumbnails
tcthumbs.idb contains the actual images, bmp compressed with zip
tcthumbs.frl only appears when deleting files, which would delete their thumbnails. It's a list of free spaces within thumbs.idb, which will be re-used when adding more thumbnails.

Neither of these should grow indefinitely...
