Display plugin name in quick view panel

Hi There,
When using Ctrl-Q for quick view in the opposite panel, the file name is displayed right above the quick view area.
It would be great to see the active plugin name as well.
What do you think?

Can be helpful for some new user.
I know very well what formats are displayed which with plugin and it can be seen with f3.
I even have a dir with files of all formats I want to see for testing my setting of lister plugins

I suspect you don't understand the request. Lister in some cases already displays info about plugin in its title bar. The same info should be available in Quick View.

What should I not understand on this request ?
For me Lister always shows the plugin in title bar when invoked by f3
and never in QuickView
Poster wants to see it in QuickView to.
I said it may be helpful for new users.

I support that. Sometimes I install a plugin and I'm not sure what it should look like, so sometimes I don't even know if it is working properly. Also, sometimes another plugin is taking precedence and I can't tell which one is it.

I was asking for a reason that was already explained by pplupo (thank you):
Sometimes there is more than one lister plugin for a file format -- and I would like to know which one is currently in use.
Apart from that: In some cases I am surprised that there is a lister plugin installed for a certain file. That happens, e.g., if the file extension is non-standard for the file type (like .xyz for a jpg). In such cases, lister still shows it. That's great! However: Which plugin is it?
Yes, I know, I could use F3 for such cases. Still: When processing large file lists, this is cumbersome.
Since the information is shown by Lister, why not by QuickView?
I hope I could clarify my request.

Speak for yourself, please. It would be useful for many users - old and new, beginners and masters. Everyone may overlook some things.

There is nothing wrong with your first answer.
(Yet, I guess, the reactions you have just received are because the following sentences in your first reply might sound a bit condescending to some people. I am using TC every day since the mid 90s. It's auto started with windows and it is the last app I close when shutting down the PC. I also have my customizations and test setups. Maintaining them is exactly the reason that led me to the suggestion. Thus, back to the topic...)
I still think that the feature could also be useful for more experience users.
In particular, there is another advantage to be considered:
In rare cases, TC hangs due to a plugin problem when viewing a file. It would be great if TC (lister and quick view) would show the plugin name before actually calling the plugin.
- If the file is displayed correctly --> you know the plugin that was used.
- If the plugin rejects the file --> TC tries the next one. Again it would be great to have the plugin name updated, since:
- If the plugin hangs --> you know immediately which plugin has caused the problem (without checking log files or even using additional tools).
Hoping for a fruitful discussion ...

It's personally addressed to the original poster which actually is "some new user".
It's incomplete, misleading and unhelpful.
It's highly illogical.

* Updated file may be buggy and crash TC.
* New plugin version may support new file types and display them instead of the plugin previously used for those types. In some cases users may be unpleasantly surprised.

True. Both has just happened here when I updated the Oracle OIT in ulister. Found and fixed the problem, but it would have been easier with an immediate hint on the used plugin.

I wanted to bring up this discussion again, since there is one more information that could be helpful when displayed along with the currently used plugin name: The "load time".
In Lister, it could look like:

Lister (<pluginname>) - [<filename>] - [<loadTime>]
In QV, it could look like:
Code: Select all
<filename> (<pluginname> / <loadtime>)
For QV: To improve readability or visual structure, the filename could remain left aligned, while the rest could go right aligned.
Regarding the implementation, I guess it might be sufficient to display the duration it took to execute the ListLoad/ListLoadNext function.
But there is a problem: If several plugins have to be tried before a working one is found, this would distort the measurement of the load time.
I see three options, here:
- Display the sum of all ListLoad/ListLoadNext execution times.
This seems to be the most reasonable option if a user wants to optimize the overall TC plugin configuration. But how to update the value once the user presses '4'? Will the value simply increase (might be confusing) or will the time counter restart at 0 each time?
- Display just the ListLoad/ListLoadNext execution time for the plugin that was finally successful.
This value might not match the perception a user got about the true load delay if plenty plugins had to be tried before. Still, this option seams most reasonable to me. And the value could be easily updated without confusion whenever the user presses '4'.

This would be great in my opinion!
