spacebar and folder size

Post by *danielczestki »

When I press spacebar on folder I get information about
- total size of folder (only!!!)

For example:
My folder: Program Files

When I use TC for this function it takes : 23 sek.
but
When I use Propeties from Windows Explorer it takes: 3 sek.
and I get
- Total size of this folder
- Number of files in this folder
- Number of folder in this folder

Question ?

Why TC make this function so slow ??

Why TC make this function so slow ??
To objectively compare size calculation speeds you have to restart Windows after each test. If you execute subsequent calls to a size calculation operation these calls will be much faster than the first calculation. Explorer or Total Commander should be noch difference.
For instance try to calculate the size in Explorer first and then try to calculate the size in Total Commander. Which one is faster?
- Total size of this folder
- Number of files in this folder
- Number of folder in this folder
If you need all this information at once take a look at my DirSizeCalc content plugin

Content plugins can be used in diffrent ways. There are for example the custom columns. They are shown in addition to the filename and extension column in the filelist.

Here is an example on how to create such a column configuration.

Right click on a column header
click on "configure custom columns" (dialog opens)
Click on the new button (dialog opens)
Click on the "Add column" button
Click on the + button
Click on dirsizecalc -> Size
Click on the "Add column" button
Click on the + button
Click on dirsizecalc -> Directory Count
Click on the "Add column" button
Click on the + button
Click on dirsizecalc -> File Count
Click on the OK button (Dialog is closed)
Click on the OK button (Dialog is closed)

The new column configuration is activated automatically. The column header right click menu now contains a new entry.

Some remarks on this.
You may have noticed that the Size field has a submenu. Here you can choose from different units (bytes, kbytes, MBytes, user-defined).
For the size fields the are two choices: Background and on demand. While the background field starts calculation automatically on demand requires to click the space key.

There are other ways to use the content plugins. You may use them in "define colors by filetype", tooltips, search, below thumbnails and the above explained custom columns.

- Total size of this folder
- Number of files in this folder
- Number of folder in this folder
Press Ctrl+L

Takes about 2 secons for the my c:\windows dir (9172 files, FAT 32, 3GHz pentium4, XP sp2) - The same dir on an NTFS volume takes a little longer - about 3 seconds.

You can also press Ctrl+Q - then you will have the same info in the opposite file panel.
