Changing drive forgets folder

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Changing drive forgets folder

Post by *PrimoHU »

Hi,

I think I found a bug. Sometimes when I change back to a drive, for example I go back to c:, TC forgets the folder I was in, and it opens TC's folder (c:\totalcmd). However I can't always reproduce this issue.

How do you go back/change drive? And what folder is open in the opposite panel?

If the same drive is open in the other panel and you choose the drive via Alt+F1/Alt+F2, TC will go to that directory and not to the one it was in before in the active panel.

In left I was on C: in the Documents folder, in right on my NAS. In left I change to D:, copy some files to the NAS. Then I change left back to C:, but it sometimes opens C:\totalcmd, not the previous Documents folder. But as I wrote, not always, I can't reproduce this anytime.
I change the drive by the drive button on the top of the pane.

Surely, that should not happen, doing as you describe it here.

If I have different dirs on drive c in the left and right side.
I change to drive d: on the left side using the button for drive D:
If I now the change the drive back to C:, it changes to the dir which is on the right side
and not the the previous one on this side.
One would expect to get into the previous dir on this side and not to the current dir on C: in another window.

In left I was on C: in the Documents folder
Where you in "C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents" or were you in the virtual folder "\\Documents" ? Because if you are in a Virtual folder when changing drive to D:, then TC wil go to the last visited folder on C: when later pressing the C: drive button - not to the virtual \\Documents folder

Regradless of PrimoHU's scenario
in my case there are only normal dirs on drive C: involved
and TC always uses the dir open in the other side when the drive is changed back.
This should not happen for my expectations.

I was in the physical folder, not in a virtual one.
And I have one folder on both sides, I don't use tabs.

One would expect to get into the previous dir on this side and not to the current dir on C: in another window.
I do this because the Norton Commander does it like this, and I got complaints about the different behaviour. The idea is that there is just one current directory per drive. So when you switch away from a drive in one panel and it's still shown in the other, that directory becomes the current directory on that drive.

For me that was not logical in Norton Commander and I find it more than inconvenient :(
I have to use the history to get into the last used dir instead of just clicking the drive button.

TC has been behaving like this, well, (almost) forever, I guess. Wouldn't make much sense to change it now. Also it's a good way to "copy" the currently active dir into the opposite panel.

Even though there is a command for that: cm_MatchSrc - I must admit I use the same approach.

Finally I could reproduce the issue.
On left I'm in "c:\Users\Prima\Downloads", on right I'm in my NAS shared folder.
On left I change to r: which is another local drive.
On left I search files, on the search result window I click on the Feed to listbox button.
I copy the listed files to the right.
On the left I click c: drive button to go back.
And TC lands in the "c:\totalcmd" folder instead of the previous one.

I use Directory hotlist button to go into my Downloads folder. It points to the folder "c:\Users\Prima\Downloads". If I walk into that folder, then it is "c:\Users\prima\Downloads" and if I make the above sequence again TC can go back to the original folder.
I think the first letter in my user name must be the root cause, if I use the hotlist button it is an upper case "P", with the other way it is a lower case "p".

Not confirmed. If I understand you correctly, TC still shows "c:\Users\Prima\Downloads" on right when you click c: drive on the left. Here TC then switches to "c:\Users\Prima\Downloads" als on the left.
