undelete file from Windows share, not in trash

Post by *bartgrefte »

Just now I accidentally deleted a txt file from a Windows share that was open in TC (thought the other folder was selected), the file is not in the trash on the host of TC, nor in the trash on the system with the shared filder, while the checkbox to move files to trash is enabled.

Is there anyway to undo the delete?

No, there is not. And neither would there in Windows Explorer or any other file manager because network shares/drives don't have a recycle bin.

If you're in luck and have Shadow Copies enabled, you might be able to recover it via the "Previous Versions" tab of the folder's/volume's properties. If not, it's unlikely you can recover this file, especially when there was written anything to the volume the file was deleted from. You can only try the usual file recovery tools, or a data recovery service.

Those do not seem to be able to recover txt files.

File recovery tools usually recover any type of file, but they must be run on the system the file was deleted from. And as I said, it's very likely you won't be able to recover anything if the blocks/clusters where the file was saved have been overwritten already. Hence file recovery tools and experts recommend to not write anything to the volume/partition/drive after an accidental deletion.
