Compare Folders - ignore name changes

Post by *YvFo »

Hello,
This is what brings me into the problem:
T1 : I have a folder FldrA. I duplicate it as FldrBkup.
######
T2: Then willfully or by error (I am very distracted and a bit old),
- I rename some file in FldrA OR some file in FldrBackup
- I edit some file in FldrA OR some file in FldrBackup
- I delete some file in FldrA OR some file in FldrBackup

T3: Later, at one point, I realize I made a mistake and I want to compare both folders (generally to pick out only the changed or missing files).

To do that, I would appreciate to have a "Compare Directories", MARKING DIFFERENTLY
files with same name, same content and same time
files with same name, same content but different time (= ignore date)
files with same name but different content
files with different name but same content (=ignore name)
######

T2: Then willfully or by error (I am very distracted and a bit old),
- I also do rename or move around subfolders.

If I do this on one side only, I get into more trouble.
So, a little more elaborate "synchronises directories" could also help a lot.

Is there some easy alternative?

Is there a plugin to display the md5, sha1 or sha256 hash in a TC custom column?

Thanks

PS I love Everything Search and use to add keywords to my file names to find them back more easily. So I change names any time I find a new appropriate keyword for its content.

To avoid the above problem, I tried to backup files, splitting them into file data and directory info. So, I copied all files, naming them with their Sha256-hash-value.ext and, on the other side, copied the file directory structure, adding systematically the sha256-hash-value to their name and removing the data (i.e. 0 length files)

You can find the first three by using the Synchronize tool.

The fourth one: "files with different name but same content" you can find with the Find Files tool: Click on the "Advanced" tab, select "Find duplicate files", "same size" and "same contents". The two directories FldrA and FldrBkup has to be in the same parent directory, for that to work, so you might have to move one of the folders temporarily. Then mark them both in the file panel and start the search (F7)

Wrong. You can either manually enter full folder names separated with semicolon to "Search in:" field or copy and paste those names like that:

Search in: [C:\FldrA;D:\FldrBackup ]

Alt+Shift+F7 (Search in separate process) is a better choice for this case.
