Suggestion for Line numbers

Post by *Native2904 »

Sometimes when I'm searching in a folder for a file, in list view and I don't really know as this file is called, I wish I have a line numbers (tiny on the left side like in many Editors) to orientation.
OK, there is a variable Scrollbar on the right side and on the bottom there is a line with overview of total numbers of files.
But on a small desktop, the proportions of Scrollbar and files are not really clear to show the position by scrolling up and down through the Folder.
There are more situations for a non-professional where line numbers are certainly helpful.

So, is it possible to make a small column before the filename with line numbers?

This option would be slow down the pure Lister for large files.
If you want line numbers install the CudaLister plugin which also provides syntax highlighting.

Horst.Epp,
This is not about Lister.

Not in Lister, I mean list view file under file with extensions, size and date.

I see.
My 2nd file manager XYPlorer has this feature but I never used it in any way.
I prefer its favorite files function to remember certain files from long lists.
I used the Bookmark function of the TC Twinkey plugin
but unfortunately its not working in Dark Mode.

For cases like this I use QuickSearch eXtended Version 2.2.7 for Total Commander,
which among other things has a "Similarity search". Just start typing and the files will be filtered for the search term in [almost] real-time.

For more specific cases, I use the context menu of 'Everything' and search for the desired file in real-time in 'Everything'.
(The search result(s) can be transferred to Total Commander in various ways).

For me, I can't see any advantage for line numbering in Total Commander.
On the contrary: For me it would just be a waste of space.

Should it come to an implementation, then please only as an option.

All that would be needed is something akin to [=tc.random number] but more like [=tc.sequential number].

Yes I'm using QuickSearch eXtended too but only for files where I know the name from. For example, I have 119 files, and I'm searching for file 63 or 49 then it's beneficial when I can notice where my position is in the folder.
It is out of the question that as a power user the reasons, why I need this line numbers, are very rare.
When this column was switchable, that was even better.

I don't want to go too far with my suggestion, because TCMD is a great tool for me (and many other users) and I don't want nag.
