[TC10.50 b1-b4] Timestamp Format Hint: Is this by design?

Post by *jiangzhenjerry »

My Windows system locale is set such that the date format is yyyy-MM-dd. If I invoke the "Change Attributes" window and look into the hint for "change date/time":

TC 10.00: It shows as YYYY-MM-dd
TC 10.50 b1 onward: It shows as YY-MM-dd

Please see the screenshot here.

Is this change by design? Granted this is just a display (not functional) change. If I actually want to change the date of files/folders, both "2022-05-04" and "22-05-04" will work.

I can confirm the difference. I thought it might be dependent on the setting in "Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Tabstops/Data Formats" -> "Show century in date (20xx)" - but it is not.

I prefer the old way with 4 Y's (actually here under Danish locale it was yyyy not YYYY)

It should be changed back to YYYY because that is how it is displayed in: "Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Tabstops/Data Formats" -> "Date format:"

I Confirm it too. And in my locale the diff is also strange:
dd.MM.YY - but not dd.MM.yyyy so as in my OS format date is tuned.
And not as "Tabstops/Data Formats" combobox with values of date format could suggest: DD-MM-YYYY.

Unbelievable - how many variants on such simple thing do exist...

Thanks guys for confirming! So YYYY and yyyy are different... I learned something new today :D Thanks for pointing this out.

So I should say my system locale is actually yyyy-MM-dd (I corrected my original post to reflect this). In the past TC showed as YYYY-MM-dd (not 100% correct but acceptable I guess). But now with "YY" it is a bit off.

The dialog box accepts both 2 digit and 4 digit years, the parts just need to be entered in the order shown there.

Yes, I understand how it works. I just feel it is counter-intuitive because it is different than the system locale setting. It is almost like telling me "don't use the normal yyyy that you are familiar with!"

If this hint is only meant to remind users of the correct input order and not meant to enforce the actual number of digits, then a single digital indicator (y-M-d, d.M.y....) would be clear enough.

I fully agree - and I don't see any reason to change the way is was in previous versions of TC.
