Missing special Icons

Post by *pdario »

Hello, in my profile directory the following folders lost their "special" icon in TC:
  • Favorites
  • Save Games
  • Searches
I can see them as "special" in File Explorer (W11).

Do you know why?
Is there any fix?

Check desktop.ini files in the directories.

What should I check?
This is desktop.ini for "Saved Games"

They miss r attribute, but so the desktop.ini files in the folders that ARE displaied with special icons, such as Pictrures.
I tried setting them read only, but nothing changed.

As I said, File Explorer CAN show them with special icons.

It is the folder, not the desktop.ini file that has to have the read-only attribute set.

Same: all said folders ("working" and "not working") are already set to readonly.

Check that "Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Icons" -> "Show icons for special folders: Normal file system" is enabled in TC.

I have checked the referenced image file with Lister, iclview plugin:
%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll

The icon with ID 186 only has the special look in the 256x256 pixel subicon. The smaller icons all have the standard folder icon.
I have uploaded it here:
https://www.ghisler.ch/images/imageres_186.jpg

Here both Total Commander and the Explorer use the smaller icon, except in thumbnail view or when user larger symbols.

Microsoft would have to update their imageres.dll so all the smaller icons also contain the symbol. But I don't think that they will ever do that.

You could extract the .ico file from imageres.dll and then delete all the smaller subicons, and finally change the desktop.ini for "Saved Games" to point to that .ico file. But it would look bad when using e.g. 16x16 icons scaled down from that one 256x256 icon with the symbol on it...

@pdario:
I made an .ico file with the Saved Games icon in all required resolutions. The result does not look that bad, see https://s20.directupload.net/images/221214/4lbioqcq.png

You can download the "SavedGames.ico" here (choose the "free download option"!): https://ufile.io/iie7iq65

With that you can try what Christian Ghisler suggested:
...and finally change the desktop.ini for "Saved Games" to point to that .ico file

Yes! This worked!

Any chance of having other folders, too? ;-)
