[TC 11.00b2] Too many items in the default directory history list

Post by *yyang »

I just upgraded from 10.52 to 11b2, and the first surprise was the long list of items in the default directory history list. I've never expected a scrollbar there, and holding Shift for the full list is new knowledge to me, after searching for similar issues.

This may be silly, but is there an option to return to the old length (shorter than a maximized panel, without a scrollbar) when Alt+Down is pressed? Even better if the folder icons can be toggled off. Thanks!

Yes, there's too many items by default, but you can play with some ini settings:

Code: Select all

[Configuration]
ShowFrequentlyUsed=1
FrequentlyUsedLen=15
HistoryLen=32

It's a feature, not a bug!
While the old menu was hard to navigate, the new dialog now has a vertical scrollbar AND automatically scrolls the newest part of the history into view. It's much easier now to handle a lot of entries, both by mouse and by keyboard.
I recommend trying the new feature first before disabling it as Sob suggests. After a few days you will probably find it useful to have access to more history entries and to search in them.

Thank you all for the help! I'll try to adapt my intuition to this new design.

@tuska Special thanks for the nice summary!

@ghisler Is it possible to turn off the directory icons, please?

Will there be an option to reverse the order for the most used directories, similar to ReverseHistory?

There is one in the context menu of the list.

yes, there is, but this also switches history and most used.
i only want to resort the most used directories, i.e. most visited on top (bottom at the moment) but still below all the normal history.

Thats exactly how its looks for me after setting it in the context menu.
The most visited list is still below the history list
which is also sorted following the setting ReverseHistory=1.

The picture shows the correct sorting order of the recent history and the problem with the most visited order. I want the top visited - 32 in this case - to be on top of the most visited, still below the recent history. just reverse the most visited order.

When I change the option, recent and most used is revered as well.

BTW the menu item with "show all entries" vanishing after clicking is also very strange.

... and by doing that it scrolls most visited dirs out of view. Which isn't great when top few most visited dirs is #1 thing I want, and top few most recently visited dirs is #2. With #1 and #2 being at the opposite ends of the list, if there's scrolling, I'm not able to see both right away.

I'm not complaining, just explaining. Now it's configurable and shorter list is good most of the time, and I can always get the full one with Shift if needed.

Beta 3 will have a new page in main configuration (which can also be reached from the history context menu) where you can set all these parameters like the number of visible and saved items. Please check it when beta 3 comes out later this week!
