Quick reordering of button bar buttons

Here is a thing I am really missing from time to time:

How about quickly reordering buttons in the current button bar by keeping Alt or Ctrl or Shift pressed while dragging them with the mouse?

The change button bar dialog is a bit uncomfortable, especially with many buttons...

I agree 100%. I've thought about it a lot too.
Just let it be Shift, because it does it now when dragging from file panels.
And for Alt/Ctrl, it's better to do what I requested here.

Workaround:
- right click and select copy on the button you want to move
- right click and select paste where you want the button to be
- delete the button you copied.

PS: Do you know that you can move a button in 'change button bar' with Shift+Cursor Left/Right?

I doubt he doesn't know about it. There is a different level of usability here.

True, these two options exist. Still, especially for button bars with many buttons or users that maitain several button bars, a more convenient option would be great.

And: Shift+Drag might even allow to move buttons into/from button bars that open as menu.

Shift is already used for overiding opening buttons with other buttonbars as menu, so that might interfere with Shift+Drag...?

But otherwisw support++++ for the proposal.

It could be done differently, e.g. entering the toolbar editing mode as in Firefox

This will not interfere, since to switch to such a button bar, the mouse cursor must be above this button, which contradicts the very logic of dragging to other positions.

There are many places where there is such a mode. For security, pinning the toolbar makes sense.

You can quickly move buttons by drag&drop in Configuration - Button bar.
If I added it directly to the bar, even with Shift, there would be a big danger of accidentally moving around buttons.

As I wrote above, this feature is available on many toolbars of other programs. None of the authors were afraid to add this functionality. Yes, even in Windows panels (taskbar, quick launch), shortcuts can be dragged as you like. And there, for security, since the days of Windows 95, there is a proposed pinning function.

With ModifierKey+Click I also don't see a risk in accidentially moving a button.
(Actually, files/folders can also be moved/copied this way and nobody complains...)

And as said:

* The change button bar dialog is a bit uncomfortable, especially with many buttons...
One reason is that it is not resizable and shows only some buttons. Yes, it scrolls when dragging icons left or right but that's still not convenient.

* Modifier+Click might even allow to move buttons into/from/between button bars that open as menu.
At the moment it's extremely inconvenient to move buttons between button bars.

Christian,

Well, I think the danger of doing this accidentally is quite low, and even if it happened by accident, it's not like there is any data loss or so, we can just move the button back.

Using the Button Bar Editor from the Ultra TC Editors Add-on
makes all sort of button bar changes very easy.
