solved [TC 11.00b4] String 2121 should be changed

Post by *petermad »

In TC 11.00b4 the righty-click menu item for the Directory history string 2121should be changed from

Code: Select all

2121="Re&verse order (last visited at the top)"
to something like:

Code: Select all

2121="Show frequently used list at the bottom or last visited directory at the top"
The item has two differnt way of operating depending on whether "Show most frequently used directories" is enabled or not.

Maybe string 2121 should be split into two different strings used depending on the setting of "Show most frequently used directories":

Code: Select all

2121="Re&verse order (last visited directory at the top)"
2130=Show frequently used list at the bottom

Sorry, you are overestimating the average user, no one will understand that.
That is exactly why I think there should be two strings - one or the other is shown depending on the mode (+/-Show most frequently used directories) - no-one can figure the current approach out.

The current string "Reverse order (last visited at the top)" is not even correct if "Show last visited directory closest to the middle of the list" is enabled and "Show most frequently used directories" is enabled - in that case the last visited directory will be shown at the opposite position of the what the checkmark next to "Reverse order (last visited at the top)" indicates.

The current string "Reverse order (last visited at the top)" is not even correct
Actually it is correct, it doesn't mean "the last visited directory is at the top", it means "the list of the last visited directories is at the top" above the list of most frequently used directories.

And we don't need two strings, because it's either checked or unchecked. Maybe I should just change it to the longer version "the list of the last visited directories is at the top" or something similar?

it means "the list of the last visited directories is at the top"
Ok but if "Show most frequently used directories" is NOT enabled it actually means: "last visited at the top" - no matter what the setting for "Show last visited directory closest to the middle of the list" is.

The entry "Reverse order (last visited at the top)" simply act differently depending on whether "Show most frequently used directories" is enabled or not - and that is the part that will confuse the users.

I think enough "Recent visited directories at the top" because it's clear that is about a list, a history list.

For me work like a charm, exactly as I expect.
Just the meaning must be found as concludent.

You mean "Recently visited directories at the top"? That's probably the best solution, I will use that.

It is still not correct.

Use this configuration: https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/history0.png

Open the History and disable "Reverse order (last visited at the top)": https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/history1.png - notice that the last visited directory (c:\totalcmd) is at the top of the history section, and that section is at the bottom.

Enable "Reverse order (last visited at the top)": https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/history2.png - notice that the last visited directory (c:\totalcmd) is at the bottom of the history section, and the section is now at the top.

Disable "Show most recently used directories" and disable "Reverse order (last visited at the top)": https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/history3.png - notice that last visited directory (c:\totalcmd) is at the top.

Enable "Reverse order (last visited at the top)": https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/history4.png - notice that the last visited directory (c:\totalcmd) is at the bottom.

in all 4 cases the last visited directory is in the oposite position than what is chosen.

Of course if you disable the History option: "Show last visited directory closest to the middle of the list", then the status of "Reverse order (last visited at the top)" will follow the wording. But It is still peculiar that the History list and the Frequently visited list is switched by "Reverse order (last visited at the top)"

I think that the only string 2121 that can be universal for all settings is simply: 2121="Re&verse order" leaving out the "(last visited at the top)" part, because it is unpredictable what will end up at the top.

Why do you think that? It's exactly where it should be.
Let's check the first case:
"Show last visited directory close to the middle of the list" is checked,
and
"Reverse order (last visited at the top)" is unchecked.
Therefore the history section is at the bottom due to the second setting (last visited=history is at the bottom),
and the last visited directory within the history section is at the top because this is the middle of the list.

the last visited directory within the history section is at the top because this is the middle of the list.
the translator gave it to me in my language and my eyes bulged.
this one sounds so non-obvious and incomprehensible that it is not.
let's do as the worshipful petermad suggested!

look at these two again where the the History option "Show last visited directory closest to the middle of the list" is ENABLED.

Disable "Show most recently used directories" and disable "Reverse order (last visited at the top)": https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/history3.png - notice that last visited directory (c:\totalcmd) is at the top, even though "Reverse order (last visited at the top)" is disabled.

Disable "Show most recently used directories" and enable "Reverse order (last visited at the top)": https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/history4.png - notice that the last visited directory (c:\totalcmd) is at the bottom, , even though "Reverse order (last visited at the top)" is enabled.

and changing the string to "Reverse order (Recently visited directories at the top)" because in the last scenario it is at the bottom.

2121="Re&verse order" will cover both the scenario where it is the Frequently visited LIST and the History LIST that changes position and the case (when "Show most recently used directories" is DISABLED) and it is the ITEMS in the History list alone that changes order.

we saw - and petermad imho in much more confident manner explained - that this is not enough - that this is still misleading and misunderstanding.
Of course, translators into native languages will be able to level this strangeness in the selected phrases, but still, in English it should initially sound more reasonable, or something. The simpler version of petermad - is much better suited to this situation. But on the help page - you can explain this parameter in much more detail (*) - taking into account the options for the location of 'paths' blocks relative to each other and sorting within the blocks. Otherwise, it turns out that in one short phrase you are trying to do both at once. But that won't work. In the settings/menu it is better to write exactly shorter, as petermad suggested.

P.S. (*)
for example, it would be very appropriate and clearer if you used pictures for explanations. For some reason, you have very few pictures inside help file. Too pity. It's just that the text is very rarely perceived in detail, especially if the option has to do with changing something constantly visible on the screen - then the difference in using the option should be clearly seen, and not just read about the fact of its presence. For example, as in the post from petermad above - only through the pictures and it becomes clear what is at stake.
