Help for "Find Files" with 'Everything' needs an update

Post by *NotNull »

From the Find Files:General help text:
Everything
Uses the program 'Everything' to search NTFS-formatted drives. The tool accesses the internal file index (Master File Table, MFT) of NTFS-formatted disks. Therefore it works without its own time-consuming creation of a search index. However, the MFT only contains file names. The search by size and date from/to is only accelerated when Everything 1.4 or newer is used, which caches these fields too. The search for other file attributes like attributes, content plugin fields, or file contents are not accelerated.
Please update. Literary *every* sentence here is incorrect.

I would leave out all the technicalities. Also: those could change at any point (not to be expected in the near future though):

Everything creates an index of files and folders and updates this in real-time, making search results instant.

( If TC uses file-attributes beyond the filename -- like size, attributes, date/time -- that could be added to the description above)

The tool accesses the internal file index (Master File Table, MFT) of NTFS-formatted disks.
The Everything help doesn't mention MFT or Master File Table anywhere. Where does this information come from?
And why, with indexing disabled, have I never observed a quick search in comparison with programs (like UltraSearch, ScanFs, etc.) where MFT is declared?

From the Everything author himself: http://www.voidtools.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=403#p853
When you first run "Everything" it will index all your files and folders (this should only happen once).
"Everything" reads the NTFS Master File Table (MFT) to build its initial database.

The next time you run "Everything" it will update its database using the USN Change Journal.
And why, with indexing disabled, have I never observed a quick search in comparison with programs (like UltraSearch, ScanFs, etc.) where MFT is declared?
Well, if you don't let Everything index the NTFS volume(s), how is it supposed to be fast? It can only be fast after it has finished building its database, when it's done indexing the volume(s).

One more of several hits which clearly says it: why everything so quick?

Thank you for the valuable information!
"Everything" reads the NTFS Master File Table (MFT) to build its initial database.
This is very sad news. However, I didn't expect the best.
And this important clarification should be in the TC help, otherwise the current information is misleading.

We are talking about MFT search without indexing, as the above programs do. This would be useful for those who do not have the desire or (for certain tasks) the ability to wait for the end of indexing, given that the first file found is already the result after which the search can be interrupted.
It's also useful for unwanted creation of a large database file.
It can only be fast after it has finished building its database, when it's done indexing the volume(s).
It was clear without prompting.
