FileList: Missing File-icons

Post by *Darwin4Ever »

I have several TC 11.02 installations.
On one of the installations, in the FileList, some File-icons are not shown (one of them is for MD5). If I remember well there are others, but don't know yet which ones.

I'm sure they did show before, but suddenly they disappeared some time ago.
No clue when or related to what action this might have happened.

Any ideas what might be happening (or the reason) and how to get them back

Thanks

ghisler(Author), has a tool called registryinfo which is intended to help identify the issues with the particular file types.

Feel free to try it and see what it says, to begin with.

Lister is TC's file viewer - don't you mean: "in the file lists..." ?

Yes, of course.

Yes, please post the output from registryinfo. Some registry entries can be ambiguous, so Total Commander will pick one icon and the Explorer will pick another.

On one of the installations...
Are those installations on the same computer and user account, or are they for different computers or user accounts - I am asking to know if the different installations uses the same wincmd.ini setting file or not. If they use separate wincmd.ini files, could you perhaps maybe try and run the one installation where you are missing icons with the wincmd.ini from one of the other installations - if that brings the icons back, the problem is in TC's configuration, if the icons are not brought back, then it is probably a problem with Windows' associations.

The installations are on different computers.
I tried with the wincmd.ini from another computer --> same result so it must be Windows association

The tool returns me

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.md5]
@="md5file"
=============================
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\md5file]
@="Wholefile MD5 Checksum File"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\md5file\DefaultIcon]
@="d:\Trader's Little Helper\tralih.exe,7"
==========================================================
[Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.md5]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.md5\OpenWithList]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.md5\OpenWithProgids]
"md5file"=hex(0):
=============================
FileExts\OpenWithProgIDs(0)="md5file"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\md5file]
@="Wholefile MD5 Checksum File"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\md5file\DefaultIcon]
@="d:\Trader's Little Helper\tralih.exe,7"
I see the [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.md5] @="md5file and the "[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\md5file\DefaultIcon].

As those keys don't exist on the other machine, I already tried by removing all those keys from the registry ( and have the identical output from the tool) and restart TC
An icon is shown now but not the icon I used to have and have on the other installations

To have something to compare with, here's my report:

Code: Select all

not found: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.md5]
=============================
[Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.md5]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.md5\OpenWithList]
Total Commander displays its own icon for that [with the sigma letter].
Note. I'm dealing a lot with hash sums, and there is not a single GUI version among the tools in my use (except Total Commander, of course) to interfere with the associations.
If you have a somewhat application to compute hashsums, which at the same time can provide a specific icon(s) you used to, you have to keep it on each machine in question and [re]associate the hashsum files with it within the standard Windows procedures.

Total Commander only shows the icon with the sigma letter when md5 isn't associated with any external program. This is the case for beb, but not for Darwin4Ever. You could change the value
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\md5file\DefaultIcon]
@="d:\Trader's Little Helper\tralih.exe,7"
to the icon you want, e.g. to
@="c:\Program Files\totalcmd\Totalcmd64.exe,31"
Make sure the path is correct. I recommend not using %COMMANDER_EXE%, otherwise the icon will not show up in Explorer.
