You think so?

I tested at least 10 other helpfiles for the crash which I described, and none had it.

So I think that could mean that something can be changed in the help file and the crash would not occur any more.

You said that you had tried with other .chm files without problems - have you tried with totalcmd.chm files from previous beta versions of TC 11.00?

I tried replacing some files in totalcmd.chm - could you please try with this new one: https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/totalcmdchm2.zip

Well, you confirmed yourself that the crash doesn't occur with 32-bit and this is also mentioned in the python issue I mentioned. Furthermore, that issue also proves that it doesn't only happen with TC help files. Did you read the issue at the link I posted?

Can you try this to see if it helps:
* Restart your computer or log out and log in again.
* Go to the folder %APPDATA%\Microsoft\HTML Help
* Delete TOTALCMD.chw and hh.dat (warning: deleting "hh.dat" resets all CHM windows to their default settings)
* Open the Help in 32-bit TC by pressing F1, use the Index and Search and browse to a number of pages
* Restart your computer or log out and log in again.
* Try 64-bit TC again.

What regional/language settings does your system use? On Windows 11, run control.exe and click on the "Region" option. Then go to the second tab to check what is set for non-unicode programs.
Please also click on the button in that section to check whether the option "Beta: Unicode UTF-8" is checked.

I tried to check the "Beta: Unicode UTF-8" setting and made a restart, but it didn't do anything.
I set all regional settings to English (US) and that didn't make any changes either.

However I have to thank you, because you inspired me to finally solve a problem with Umlaute that weren't shown correctly in some old windows app. I found out that the old apps get confused if you have different regional and language settings and they are not coherently one region. I have had that problem for a year and finally got it solved.

I'll check your suggestions later today.

I tried replicating the problem on multiple computers and virtual machines with Windows 10 and 11, but it never happened.
Does it matter what you are searching for in the index?

I usually tried with the word "sort" because I was trying to find out if I can mix folders and files sort just by date (not just folders first, then files, or vice versa but mix them sorted by date). But I also tried a couple of other words, and every time there was a crash after the 2nd or 3rd letter.

I am using Win11 Pro 21H2.

Here is the crash report:
Faulting application name: TOTALCMD64.EXE, version: 11.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
Faulting module name: hhctrl.ocx, version: 10.0.22000.653, time stamp: 0x489a0c29
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000000040b81
Faulting process id: 0x14d8
Faulting application start time: 0x01d9b915273bb8d3
Faulting application path: C:\Apps\tc7\TOTALCMD64.EXE
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\hhctrl.ocx

Maybe upload C:\WINDOWS\system32\hhctrl.ocx to virustotal. Not for checking viruses or something, but checking, if your file is unic (and that means damaged). Or - maybe better: put a checksum sha256 of your C:\WINDOWS\system32\hhctrl.ocx here. But I than can not help, because I have only Win11 Pro 22H2 here (and myself using Win10 Pro 22H2 because of taskbar...).

Only interested: Why 21H2?

Thanks for everyone's help.

SHa256 c:\windows\hh.exe
ae52df2a8d4cbeae82e2311edcfe035de28df126e962b10009c4ae133818a846 *hh.exe
c:\windows\system32\hhctrl.ocx
6777e6ff15ade245581f8100d49d98d19aaf9263aa7661bc0907c48729da9bd0 *hhctrl.ocx

No abnormalities in virustotal - File distributed by Microsoft

Anyway - it works for all CHM files except TOTALCMD.CHM - so I wouldn't have expected any abnormalities. I even tried renaming TOTALCMD.CHM but still no cigar.

21H2 because Windows Update never offered to upgrade to 22H2.

So exactly the same as I reported.

Try direct run:
"C:\Windows\SysWOW64\hh.exe" C:\TotalCmd\TOTALCMD.CHM
