Found the problem:
If F9 is not defined, but F10 is, F9 takes the definition of F10, meaning, pressing F9 has the same effect as F10. Funny bug :-)
I switched to Linux, bye and thanks for all the fish!

Let me just add this note - the best unpacking utility I found is Staffit Expander. I use WinRar shellextensions to unpack manually, and I press SHIFT ENTER on archive to call Staffit. Staffit have some very good options for this like :

- it can unpack to the same directory as original. If only 1 file is in the archive it will not create directory. If there are several files it will create dir to suround them. If there is 1 directory in the root of archive it will not create surrounding directory. If you have several levels in archive, like 1 directory inside 1 directory inside .... it will drop them all and create only one with files in it.

- it will delete archive if expanded OK.

If anybody knows some other tools that have mentioned options it would be good to share the thoughts. Stuffit is slow on first use and it is not freeware. It can also unpack *.sit files (its native format0 which is rare among Windows unpackers according to my research.

Confirmed.

Another interesting thing. The action of an unassigned F9 where F10 is redefined seems to be closely connected to the LEFT file panel.

Try this: Assign F10 to cm_VolumeId and F9 to nothing. If you press F10 you will be prompted for the volume name of the drive in the ACTIVE panel (as expected), but if you press F9 you can ONLY set the Volume name for the drive in the LEFT panel.

Or this: Redefine F10 to cm_VersionInfo and F9 to standard. If I press F9 on a file in the RIGHT panel then the Properties of the last highlighted file in the LEFT panel will be shown, and afterwards the focus is moved from the right to the left panel!

If neither F9 nor F10 are redefined then there is a small difference between the action of the two keys. F9 activates the leftmost menu option if the left file panel is active and the rightmost menu option if the right panel is active, whereas F10 always activates the leftmost menu option. With F10 the activation of the menu toggles on an off with each press on the key - with F9 you can only activate the menu, not deactivate it - But this is actually mentioned in the keyboard Help.

I am humbled that my simple query has generated 3 pages of learned discourse. I THINK the answer is "no."

Thanks all

That's true. With inbuilt functions it is not possible to unpack an archive to the same directory with one Click and one 'OK'.

revival time:

any chance of seeing this feature in TC7 then ?
actually what would be the best solution if there would be an intern command to unpack which would accept parameters.
That would make it possible to pass the desired unpacking options with a simple hotkey or button ;)

Greetings
