[OT] Windows Vista influences to TC

Post by *fenix_productions »

Hi, everyone.

I've been testing Vista lately and I wonder how big influence for future versions of TC it will have. It seems like Microsoft give big feedback to make default file manager more usable.

There are few things that TC can't even dream about it:
- extended command bar functionality (dropdown menus for every part of directory path)
- command bar with auto suggestions (dropdown menu again)
- nice search bar with visible results in real time (thx indexing)
- advanced sorting with pretty usable filters (and groupping)
- temporary left-aligned panel with last used folders
- many more...

I understand that Vista is greedy for PC's resources and TC is the smallest and the quickest one, but looking to the future I have some doubts. How this will be?
What do other users think about it? What are Your opinion?

P.S. Please remember x64 processors family and one thing: for 32bit applications (e.g. TC) system folders cannot be reached...

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

First of all these little helpers haven't been introduced in Vista. It also exists atleast in Windows 2000 and XP.
Please take a look at this thread: http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=8765
You'll read there that some kind of auto-complete is planned for TC 7.
Or do you mean something else?
nice search bar with visible results in real time (thx indexing)
This is also not really a Vista feature. You can download free desktop searches (also from Microsoft) for other operation systems.
A search based on a database is one of the features which I would like to see in TC. It has been discussed multiple times here in the forum. I created a wiki articlea while ago:
http://www.ghisler.ch/wiki/index.php/Faster_search
advanced sorting with pretty usable filters (and groupping)
What exactly do you mean?
temporary left-aligned panel with last used folders
Oh well I think the history menu in TC is not that bad.
many more...
Don't hesitate to report t more features to discuss. I'm testing Vista too but I expect quite different things from a new operation system...

@Lefteous
I know about all thing mentioned by You (I haven't started using this forum yesterday ;)

For sorting and filters look here:

And here (after "Stack by Size"):

Btw: What do You expect from new OS?
From my side: security & accessibility.

The Vista bread-crumbs thing (dropdowns on every folder in the path box) is already in Media Player 11.

I have to admit, it works well.

Well ok then I don't understand the first two points you mentioned.
Seems I have to play a bit more with Vista to say something about this. So far I mainly tested how the new TC version performs on Vista :-)
What do You expect from new OS?
Security is currently the number one priority for me. Microsoft has at least targeted security as number one. We'll see next year if they succeed.

1. Extended command bar functionality:
http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/vista/cmd_001.png
http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/vista/cmd_002.png
http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/vista/cmd_003.png
http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/vista/cmd_004.png

If You click on some folder in path name (e.g. "Local Disk(D:)") then this folder is opened.

2. Auto-suggestions (I hope it will be in TC too):

http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/vista/auto_003.png

P.S. I worder: if I use some TC's plugin like IEView will part of Vista's explorer.exe functionality be available (e.g. filters)? I have to check it.

OK. I've just checked IEView lister's plugin functionality and I have to say:
"Holy cow!"

It looks like that:

http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/vista/mix_002.png
http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/vista/mix_003.png
After "Group" option:
http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/vista/mix_004.png
http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/vista/mix_005.png

The only thing I'd like to have in TC now is possibility to use "IEview" folders view as additional to: brief / full / comments / thumbnail.
It could solve other problems with explorer extensions too (I wrote about it in other thread).

Exactly what the Vista Explorer can do now.

Yes, it works.
But I hope the TC supports this in future directly.
