multi rename directories without treating extension special

Post by *Zom-B »

How can I multi-rename directories (or files, but I don't need that right now) without treating the extension as a distinct part of the filename?

I often have directory names with a period in the name part (not the extension) and I want then to be treated no differently from directories with no period in their name.

For example, I'd like to use MRT on this list of directories:

...
Vol.23 Ch.259 - Half-awakened
Vol.23 Ch.260 - Vs. the SDF
Vol.23 Ch.261 - Annihilation vs. Extinction
Vol.23 Ch.262 - Like a Cockroach
Vol.23 Ch.263 - Impossible Death
...

Note that for example the second directory has extension " the SDF" which causes it to be treated differently, unless there is a way to make MRT ignore the presence of extensions altogether (putting the entire name in the [N] variable), which is exactly what I want.

Edit: revised example with a better one. The idea stays the same (nothing added)

Important: if you need 3 dots inside file/folder-names, you'd better use ansi-symbol "". This one has does not make troubles with ext's.

I don't see any checkbox that looks remotely like this. I have v8.0.

I don't understand.

If you mean enter "[N][E]" in the rename mask box, then that doesn't work. consider the example I laid out in the FP.

As Sir_SiLvA said:
Checkbox [E] directly below the "Replace with" field.

This option is only available in TC 8.0 and newer!

Sorry, first time I overlooked it and second time I misunderstood. I found the checkbox now.

I still don't get the desired result. Whether I check or uncheck that box, nothing changes. The tooltip says 'Replace also in file extensions' which suggests it only applies to search&replace, not to the rest of the MRT tool.

just regular multi-rename operations, like [N2-4] or [N5-] but on the complete name, not the filename and extension parts separately.

like:
[N3-11] on "Vol.23 Ch.259 - Half-awakened" = "l.23 Ch.2"

Try [=tc.fullname:3-11] instead of [N3-11].

Thanks, that's what I needed. I just wished there was a shorter way to do this or that it would at least be documented in the supplied help file, so I don't have to dig around every time I need it and it dropped off the bottom of the history list.

For that purpose placeholder [A] is added to TC8.01rc5 and is documented in the Help.
