Empty lines selection in Compare Contents dialog

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Empty lines selection in Compare Contents dialog

Post by *ttil »

"New Line" symbol (\r\n in Windows) does not displayed in selection in Compare Tool. Maybe it's good, maybe not. Let's discuss why not.
Look at screenshot: http://img351.imageshack.us/img351/39/compareremptylinestg8.png
To remove lines in red from right file we can:
  • Using right panel: Delete lines in red
Using left panel: Select empty lines and press Copy ->
But selecting empty lines is not an easy work!!! We can't see what lines have selected indeed!
So maybe "New Line" symbols must be displayed?
As here for example: http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/9684/selectionwithemptylinesit9.png

BTW. We have the same problem in the Lister.

Simple, when there are no lines, no line numbers are shown. When there are empty lines, you either see the line number from the original file, or 0: for newly added or modified lines.

I understood that. But I mean another thing.
In editor from Compare tool and in component which you've using to show text in Lister (I hope this is the same component) "new line" symbol in selection is invisible.
Let's you have text file with several empty lines. Open this file in Lister or in Comparer and try to select a couple of them. Ok? And now try to answer on the question: "How many empty lines are selected?". You can't see this! So you can't answer the question. And such behaviour is incorrect for editors. Just open any editor (Word!) or simple look at the second screenshot from my previous post:
http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/9684/selectionwithemptylinesit9.png (lines 5-7 are empty, no spaces).

No, they are completely self-written custom controls, different in both cases.

Ah, I see what you mean. I will try to append a space to make it look like a selected new line.
