Hi,

I would also love to see a Linux version of TC, and would have no problems paying for another license.

FTP is not required, but lister functionality and support for all file compression formats, sfv checking and file splitting/joining are musts.

What a bout a Wine guru who could give us some finetuning on running TC with Wine. I managed to get it to run under Wine, but of course many functions didn't work.

cheers

Hi !

Myself, I'm using Total Commander under WINE.

Some important features are not running properly (file associations, etc ...), but I seen that Total Commander under WINE is ** A LOT ** faster than Kruzader.

I was surprized to see that a native application was slower than an application running under emulation.

Bye!

Wine is not an emulator.

Wine is a native implementation of the win32 api.

There is not emulation layer.

ghisler (about a linux port) wrote: I wrote this allready 2 years ago (except for associations, which Linux doesn't know), but never released it because I couldn't port FTP and compare by contents. In fact, the internal TAR and GZ packers in the Windows version were originally written for the Linux version.
Well I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person in here who would love to see that baby released, and happily buy another license only because of it ...

Any news about the Linux version?
I really would like to use Total Commander on Linux. I already ran it using Wine, but I can't make simple operations such as renaming a file.
Total Commander is the only Windows application I miss on Linux, where a ton of 1st quality software is available.
I don't need the "Compare contents" and ftp functionnality. I use other tools to do that.

there is enough 'norton commander' clone on linux.

e.g : Krusader, gnome-commander, emelfm, emel2fm, tux-commander.

Each of them with their pro's and con's... Make your choice !

Did You think to publish this work on SourceForge and start the greatest opensource project in filemanagers area?
ghisler(Author) wrote:Unfortunately I had to stop development on the Linux version because of lack of time. Currently 90% of my daily work consists of support (e-mail etc). So if you want to see a Linux version, send me less e-mails. :)
To resolve this problem You can ask here and take several volunteers from old school enthusiasts, who definately will greatly help You with at least dumb emails.
Im ready and dare to help You with russian emails.

No one of counted cannot compares with the TC.
I can tell You more: TC is not only a program - it is already a live software legend. It's popularity (in Russia) is very similar to.. mozilla, not less.

Im absolutely sure - some developers from counted linux-nc-clone projects will switch to TC4linux opensource project immediately after (and if) Chris starts such project.
From Russia with love!

TC-like alternateives to Krusader under Linux

Post by *rbsjrx »

emelFM <http://emelfm.sourceforge.net/> comes with DSLinux and is OK. It's not as powerful as Krusader or TC, but it is small and fast and, overall, pretty cool. If I can't have TC, then I'd have to consider emelFM worthy of serious consideration. The UI is quite nice and it just feels right in a Linux environment. Krusader, OTOH, feels a little foreign on a Linux box. But then, TC would probably feel that way, too.

...and another *up* of this topic (-:E

So the main choice about TC under Linux is:
- either Chris maintains Linux version himself
- or he delegates development to somebody

The first way, as far as I can see, satisfacts nobody: Chris hasn't time (and, probably, some pecuniary interest due to Linux market share and OS ideology etc). And users would get much slower development of both Win and Lin TC versions.

The second way raises other questions: firstly, releasing sources or not. If not, then there's simple yet, I think, quite efficient solution: "daughter" company or group controlled by Chris or something alike. Group of programmers, developing only Linux/*BSD/Solaris/MacOS/whatever-you-want-but-not-Windows versions, and some percent from license fees from Linux versions goes to Chris as foundator.
The other way is more "OpenSourcish". The source code for Win TC can be released under some kind of "restricted" GPL, implying that none part of code could be used in any project for Windows OS. Thus Chris don't have to bother about it, OS community will greatly appreciate such a brave decision and develop a great (I believe) product for all the non-Win-OSes. "Linux Kommander" (-;E

I doubt there's reason to be afraid of opening source codes. Open Source community respects licening, so I doubt somebody would steal code and release it under other name: it would cause a great scandal. Also, as far as I remember, QCAD (I cannot post URL for this is my first post) is partly released under GPL, but is not freeware as a software package ready to use

Linux starts to march across the world, so I hope it would be supported dy software developers (-:E
The only reasons I'm not totally in Linux now are Win-only TC and foobar2000. So I'm buzzing on forums and so on 4-:E
White Russian Bear wrote:It's popularity (in Russia) is very similar to.. mozilla, not less
Far more. Mozilla products are relatively unpopular here, Opera beats them. But TC overcounts them both by no means. In the same time hardly 1% of TC copies are properly bought... And this drives me mad )-<E

TC & Linux

Post by *rbsjrx »

Under Windows, I live in TC for most of my work. But, I'm also slowly migrating a lot of stuff to Linux. When I'm in Linux, I use either Krusader or EmelFM2 for the things for which I use TC under Windows.

I'd still love to see TC for Linux, but if it doesn't happen, these others are (almost) good enough. Viewed in a larger persepective, either is better than EVER going to Vista!

which functions are missing?
i tested it with the latest wine 0.9.45 and didnt find any bigger flaws

file associations can be set now, for example with this

Thats right, I also bought a new computer (my first for home), and no Windows will touch it! What I sadly will miss, is TC really. But at work i will still continute to use windows, so we will have some insight for comparison :-)
I switched to Linux, bye and thanks for all the fish!
