[Idea] Auto-updater anyone?

Post by *CoMiKe »

Hi!

I was about to download Notepad++ v4.6, and, while I was reading its changelog, I found that his author (Don HO) has created an open-source and generic auto-updater for inclusion in any software project (including Notepad++, of course).

http://sourceforge.net/projects/gup-w32/
http://gup-w32.sourceforge.net/

So I thought that perhaps Ghisler may find it interesting and could add an auto-update feature without too much effort to Total Commander.

I haven't yet seen the auto-updater in action, but anyway, I though you should know it.

Hope to be helpful! Bye

The problem here isn't writing the downloader, I have already written a HTTP downloader (-> URL button) which could do that easily! The problem is with user privacy, and also with traffic caused by such an auto-update function.

Fully agree with Christian.
I not only don't need such a function, I'm a strong opponent of it.

I don't like any application to start some net-traffic behind my back.
One of the main reasons why I use TC is the fact, that the user can have full control on what's going on.

No problem, only suggesting it, trying to be helpful.

Total Commander won't need to be updated automatically, but show you a dialog asking whether it should download the updated version or not.

And it would need minimal traffic to check if there is a new version available.

Anyway, the only reason for Total Commander to use an auto-update feature would be to download bugfix versions, as releases are not so frequent to need it.

I care the least for such option but such statements are kind of amusing. Auto-updating in most sane programs is something voluntarily, very close to pressing enter after www.google.com in your browser.
TC for Linux please!

If an updater is implemented one day, then it should include the ability to update plugins and tools from official and inofficial sites.

A TC-only updater would be still much slower than BetaNews notification besides it would be realized as a daily background check which seems rather pointless regarding the rare updates.

If ghisler would feed the snails more often, which need several days to deliver the update email, maybe this would be an alternative as well.
