Wishlist - Feed list of files to a TC window in columns?

Post by *jdmarch »

1. I would very much like to be able to feed an arbitrary list of files (read from a text file, including full paths, of course) to a TC window. This would be useful, for example:
- to work with the scattered files in an IrfanView slideshow.
- to restore the results (possibly tweaked) of an Alt+F7 Find Files command.
- to collect related files from a project into a single view.

2. When this list of arbitrary files is fed to a TC window, it would be useful if the display could be shown in standard columns, with the path as an additional sortable column. It's much easier to see a listing like this if path, filename, size, and date are each in their own column. Of course this would be very useful for Feed to Listbox.

Thanks!

I agree. As far as I remember point 1 (except reading from a text file) is basically a feature of SpeedCommander and will possibly be supported by TC 6.0. See topic "Virtual File Lists" for details.
Regarding point 2 I think an additional sortable path column would be also handy in "Branch View (With Subdirs) Ctrl+B".

If these virtual folders are persistent, as they should be, then their contents will be stored somewhere, so why not in a text file, in which case we are only a small step away from reading such a list from a text file.

Yes indeed!!

Thanks!

jdmarch,
Take a lok at the Temporary Drives section of http://clubtotal.free.fr/tc_wfx.html .

Thanks, Roman. TempPanel does seem like a partial solution.

Yes the Temporary Panel plugin is a very partial solution. It does not pass the original file's path to the %P value for menu and toolbar parameters.

The proxy files in a virtual lister panel (called a "File Container" in SpeedCommander) should interact with every part of the TC interface as if they were the actual files being referenced (with the exception of the Delete function and perhaps one or two others - Rename? - that should operate on the proxy ONLY).

I really wanted the Temp panel plugin to work for me but gave up on it as now implemented.

Virtual file lists are so powerful a concept it boggles me what I could use them for. It would be a great way of defining and maintaining backup sets, for instance.

And yes, I know I could emulate some of the functionality with folders of Windows shortcut files, but it just isn't the same.
