Not to mention all the extra mouse-clicks needed (in comparison to toolbar/menu implementations). What the #*&% were they thinking?

I personally don't find the ribbon all that "unattractive" per se, just unproductive as a GUI metaphor. The point of using the mouse is to make things easier, not harder!

There are easily demonstrable cognitive-psychology reasons for the ribbon's inutility, but if you read much on the web, you'd be amazed at how many people (newbies and experienced users alike) have positive comments about M$'s implementation.

Because of this popularity, I expect to see more ribbon implementations going forward.

Hm... Somebody implemented it:

Horrible movie. AFAIR ribbon panels should be resized automatically so there is no other way to have so big "Examples" panel than massive amount of spaces. At least that is how it should work according to style guide.

LOL

Notice that link is to an M$ Labs effort?

So M$ promulgates an UI that requires (on average) more interaction steps than the previous UI to accomplish a given activity, and then to compensate for the resulting users' frustration/confusion, layers yet another interface on top of that which requires even more steps of interaction.

For some things, they've gone from a single click or hotkey, to what, four clicks, eight keystrokes, a trip to the hardware store with a stop at MacDonald's?

Unbelievable. Maybe that is for April Fool's?

well - at MS are probably also peoples that do not like Ribbon, but since their manager's manager's manager's manager didn't allow them to build ribbon, that looks like previous office menu/toolbars, they build at lest this. 8)
In fact I found a few times this tool quite useful

Don't worry, I don't have any plans for a Ribbon control in Total Commander. But the button bar will be improved in TC 7.5 to allow more rows, and can be accessed via keyboard now!

Maybe an improved button with a light arrow to the right, something like TCMenu, can be an usefull choice for similare commands. Please see PsPAD command bars.

@fenix_productions:
Ribbons? - You are crazy?

But I think the 2nd Screenshot - http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/tc/tc75_002.png - "quick selection" for packing is a good idea.
The "Treeview" form 1st Screenhot - http://fenixproductions.republika.pl/tc/tc75_001.png - Looks good. I have been waiting a long time ...

"Ugly" is an opinion. If you want to design GUI, your judgment can't be based on opinions. Unless they are user's opinions from UX research. But I doubt you are trying to convey such info with such vane statements...

He's going for the "grave digger" award, I guess. With a solid 6+ years stretch, he does have a good shot at it. ;)

And since the thread is already dug up, just a little note (sorry, can't resist)...

Don't overestimate UX research! If in doubt, just look at the soon to be newest and greatest Windows 10 and their absolutely horrible tablet-like "Settings app" they'll be forcing on poor *desktop* users. I'm sure they also managed to get that retarded idea confirmed as being super-awesome by some UX research...
