4 Panes possible?
I searched around the forum and couldn't find an answer:
Can I have FOUR panes in TC?
[1] [2]
[3] [4]
I saw someone say that TC is a 'strictly 2-pane file manager'. Does this mean that the only way to achieve 4 panes is to open 2 TC windows and stack them?
I am working with several folders for a project and having to click back and forth between them is annoying (few working folders, repository folder, and deployment/testing folder)

It's not possible to have 4 panes.
I wonder what is wrong with only two? You have tabs, Directory hotlist, trees and breadcrumb for easier switching between folders. Is it really so bad?

Hello !
• That's a topic discussed one thousand times here…
- Having more panels is sometimes needed, I miss often one…
- Opening two instances (or two versions, that I'm bound to do many times) sucks when you have a small size monitor.
- So, I'm not against basically, but only as an optional feature, able to be set¦removed on the spot easily.
- And using the folder-tabs is a pie in some cases, moreover not all users set them (I never use),
everyone is free to use TC in his¦her own style, so (at least) one extra panel should be very useful…

The key word you used there is switching.
When you have several folders constantly need to access for a project,
switching is very inefficient. The human brain is not good at
multitasking, and making me think about where to switch to is another
step on an already multitasking-intensive scenario (website graphic
design, layout, programming and testing).
I use 3 of the 4 things you suggested already (tabs, hotlist, breadcumbs)
and none of them are as good as opening up another TC window to
emulate having four panes open simultaneously. It's a pretty
simple concept, and switching is not the same.
In any case, it looks like I will have to continue opening another TC
window for the time being, because I need the folders open in front of
me - sometimes being only human has its shortcomings

Re: When needed---
I agree, four (or more) panels whould help a lot and whould be a unique feature for a file manager (at least, I don't know any, which can do this...Clo wrote: so (at least) one extra panel should be very useful…

What whould also help, whould be a functionality to click on a tab on one side which automaticly selects another tab on the other side.
(I don't mean "Add current dir" > "Also save target dir")
Or is that already possible?
Re: 4 Panes possible?
Use Q-dir and your wish came true.qda wrote:I searched around the forum and couldn't find an answer:

But you don't know what you lose...

Not handy---

Hello !
• Using superposed windows is not handy at all for users like myself who work mainly with the mouse and Drag & Drop…
- As a first step, I would be happy with the following layout :
[1] [2]
[ 3 ] (on demand)

2Clo,
OR you could do it like Araxis Merge does with 3 windows side by side. This layout would be better on a widescreen monitor, though.

Poor here…

Hi Bob !
• Most certainly 3 juxtaposed panes are convenient, but alas here is a poor 17" CRT only…
… and no hope to improve this soon

2Clo,
I got lucky and found a 22 inch widescreen at a reasonable price when I could afford it a few years ago. I will never go back to a non-widescreen now.

I missed a 23" sold off some years ago, there were a few ones which were sold in a single day (online provider…).
- This was with a nice discount, that will not happen again, I guess… {/OT}
