2PeterTBCarp2: May you contact Christian and offer your help as translator to create a new "Britsh English" language file.

This way you can contribute with all you knowledge about native English language.

We already have some variants for German (German, Kölsch, Plattdüütsch), so why not have it for English too.

Those who get hurt by reading the default language may use this one instead.

I second that the default language file should not have any spelling or grammar errors.

I think it is true that there are people who measure (part of) the quality of a program by the language used and may even project that on the code quality.

Though the wording PeterTBCrab2 chose might be a bit quirky his critique was constructive. <sarcasm>After all he is British...</sarcasm>

So obvious (and not so obvious) errors should be corrected without any hard feelings.

Sure. But let me draw your attention to a quite successful exception: For years if not decades, the Tuscan winery La Vialla has been selling its agricultural products to a well-off, ecologically inclined, German clientele. All this time they have never cared to improve their funny usage of the German language. At first I thought that they couldn't afford a proper translator. No I'm convinced that this lovable lingo forms part of their clever marketing strategy. So – who knows – maybe Total Commander, being after all the Swiss Army Knife of file managers, follows the same rules?

Much ado

Gentlemen,
Could we just get on with the suggestions for changes?
It is, after all, not our decision, but Christian's.
If you don't think that the spelling and grammar should be improved perhaps you would like to open your own 'status quo' thread.
Now, where were we?..

I think that there could be small improvements made but there is also the problem of having enough room in the dialog boxes for some of the phrases. I would fight against any major word changes though as that is what we have been used to for so long now and they seem to work fine as is. And if they change one language setup, there will be others that step in and want the same thing for all language setups. Not worth all the hassle.

I think that it is not so much the user interface as it is the Help file that PeterTBCarp2 wants to improve (?).

But I also think it is a way bigger task to "clean up" the help file than it is to thange the dialog of the program itself.

Either way, it is going to be a big task that will take some time away from improving TC itself. As long as no big words are used that we all have to look up, then he can knock himself out cleaning things up. ;)

Where to

Post by *PeterTBCarp2 »

Thanks sqa; will look.

Yep, it's not the user interface that worries me so much as the surrounding text, the web site, What's new, readmes, and especially Help (circa 1980s). The vibe, the aura.

It's the look, the buzz, the shine, the sizzle, the credibility, the professionalism, that is perceived by the primary English-speaking world.

Try and find a mistake on Microsoft's websites. Apart from the Yankee effect. Very slick; very smooth.

(Actually, the only thing I alter in the interface is Configuration, 'Save All Positions..' and '..Save All Other Settings'. Seems to cover it better.)
