2JogaBaer,

Sorry to sound ignorant here, but what are VHDs?
chmod a+x /bin/laden -- Allows anyone the permission to execute /bin/laden

How do I un-overwrite all my data?

Microsoft VirtualPC drive files.
BTW, Windows 7 may be installed not just onto separate partition but onto such virtual drive too.

2MVV,

Thanks for the info. I still use XP Pro so that is why I didn't recognize it.

Hey, it sounds great!
So if I want to scrap the current installation and put a clean one, can I avoid partition formatting?
Currently I have 1 partition for OS and one for data, but it would be nice to have just one because I wouldn't have to decide about sizes of each, it would adjust dynamically.

I use CompletePC-Backup (which is integrated in Vista and W7) to backup my system partition. It creates vhd-files.

Now I'm looking for a way to extract files from the vhd in Vista. There are two ways: mount as a virtual drive (needs additional software installed in Vista) or let TC handle it like an archive (which I prefer).

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to enable TC to do this.

:D

You may load temporary OS from W7 installation drive, open console and create VHD, and to install OS onto it. Please read more e.g. here: http://blogs.msdn.com/knom/archive/2009/04/07/windows-7-vhd-boot-setup-guideline.aspx - it's a nice feature to install W7 if you don't have it.
But you may not format your partition before installing OS anyway - I never format my partitions, I just move all needed data to folder _BACKUP and install new OS - it will erase Windows folder itself (but usually I start PC from XPE and move Windows and other system folders/files into _BACKUP folder so I don't need to delete them - I sort backup files in new OS).

I wonder whether the bootloader is future-proof..
You made me think...I don't like all the mess with extensive directory structures created by Windows and myself, mixed together. Having a single Windows file would let me avoid it....but having a single directory for own stuff, mounted as another volume would work just as well. I would remove old Windows before installation (because simple instaling one over another would likely leave a lot of files not overwriten, i.e. programs' settings). I'll check some best-practices guides before doing so, but it sounds tempting. :)
EOT.
Thanks.

Got a question:

I have the 7zip plugin and the 7zip app installed.

wincdm.ini
223,.......

But when I want to copy more than one file or file and folder from a 7zip archive I get "no unpacker configurated". Works with rar or zip.

ideas?

If you entered to archive, you have archiver configured.

You need to specify plugin for archive extension, e.g.:

Code: Select all

[PackerPlugins]
7z=223,%COMMANDER_PATH%\Plugins\Packer\7Zip\7Zip.wcx
In this case TC will open 7z files using specified archiver. But if you open archive using Ctrl+PgDn instead of just Enter, TC will try to open archive using each archiver plugin.
