Why Total Commander is (not) so ugly

This judgement seems to suggest that you missed Roman's post

I do no think that these two screenshots support that T.C. is ugly by design:
+Total Commander 7.50
+Total Commander 7.50 with tumbnailview
Not even the official screenshots do so. :wink:

Yet, beauty (or ugliness) is in the eye of the beholder only. So there is no arguing about beauty (or ugliness).

I created the official screenshots using TCs default icons (which were redesigned in TC 7).
If your TC looks different, maybe you use an older version?

Hi, neverthelesshello.

Let me add this:

(1) As stickynomad may have realized immediately, my T.C. screenshots show that I am using the T.C. standard iconset created by himself, by stickynomad. The buttonbar of course displays a number of programme icons as well that the installed programmes bring along (Firefox, Opera, Process Explorer etc pp).

(2) The foldername brackets have been switched off.

(3) The fonts used have been modified. Segoe UI instead of Microsoft Sans Serif.

(4) The background colours have been modified to match the Windows Vista theme a bit.

Oh yes, and the screenshots have been taken on Windows Vista Home Premium, 32bit, where the Aero Theme is active. If the same screenshots had been taken on a Windows 2003 server using the Classic Windows theme, Total Commander would look much more old-fashioned.

Cheers,
Karl

I hate the default folder icons and the way you get a outerline around the folder icons in the lister when you are using the larger thumbnail view.

You can hide the outline by putting ThumbnailFrame=-2 in the [colors] section of your wincmd.ini file.

Put this line in your wincmd.ini:

IconLib=wcicolib.icl

where wciolib.icl is a library with your own icons.

You can download a sample wcicolib.icl here: https://plugins.ghisler.com/addons/wcicolib.zip

Make a search for IconLib on this forum - you can probably find others.

<side note>

Why only have I got the strong feeling that this thread which was meant to be about describing Total Commander in a few words has been hijacked for quite different purposes???

Well you started the discussion with me in reply to my comment and you posted screen shots which I then replied to and it just sort of went from there. I think the word hijack is a bit strong.
But anyway lets stop talking about the ugly question in this thread then, agreed?!

Hi, neverthelesshello.

Perhaps a moderator could split this thread here and move the second part to a thread discussing Why Total Commander is (not) so ugly.

Discussing the look of Total Commander is neither a bad idea in itself, nor is it forbidden. A good product deserves to be packed nicely.
Does anyone like the default folder icons?
Yes, I do. It took much time and lots of patience to convince the programme author to replace the Windows 3.11 like icon set by the ones which stickynomad has created.

But it would not hurt having a choice between two or even three sets of icons.

There was a small number of promising icon sets a few years ago - still to be found on www.totalcmd.net I guess. Yet, it seems as if almost all talented artists have stopped creating and publishing icon sets for Total Commander.
should there be some sort of poll ? I would vote for new ones of course.
Well, you are free to start a poll about it. Of course you are free to vote for new icons, too. :-) Yet, it may speed up things much more if you create and publish an iconset for Total Commander yourself. - Just an idea. :wink:

Kind regards,
Karl
