Hello Ghisler,
Could you put some screen as the new version 8 of Total Commander?.
I need total reliability is working with Total Commander (I have Windows 7 64-bit), and I do not trust betas on daily work (I now use the 7.56a).
I am a registered user of Total Commander for many years, and also a version for Windows Mobile ... essential programs for me.
Can I install the version 8 beta in another folder, without interfering at all with the current 7.56a ?.
Regards,

Hello, jcm.
E.g. by following this instruction:
Though about updating an already portable installation to a newer versions, the steps can be used for creating a separate beta installation as well:

Yes, you can.Can I install the version 8 beta in another folder, without interfering at all with the current 7.56a ?.
E.g. by following this instruction:
Though about updating an already portable installation to a newer versions, the steps can be used for creating a separate beta installation as well:
- Create the programme folder for your T.C. beta installation, e.g. J:\Utils\TC80beta
- Follow the steps explained here: manually installing portable T.C.
- As this is a new installation, create a new wincmd.ini file in the TC80beta programme folder which holds the following entry in the section [Configuration]: UseIniInProgramDir=7
You may e.g. do so by copying the wincmd.ini of your current T.C. 7.56a installation and adding this entry to the section [Configuration].

Thanks for the reply, but I see complicated to have two versions of the TC on the PC. The version I have it operational very personalized 7.56a with multiple folder icons for direct access to all my programs (do not use icons on the Windows desktop). If I install in parallel 8 beta version this is much more complicated.
Apart from this issue, could put some graphic images such as this new version 8 beta, or is the same or similar to the current version 7.56a?.

JCM

Well, I just copied the whole TC folder to "TotalCommanderBeta" folder.
Next I did an install of the beta version (no update) into this folder.
This replaces just the files, but keeps the settings.
With [Configuration]: UseIniInProgramDir=7 it uses local settings file.
You just have to create 2 different shortcuts pointing to TOTALCMD.EXE at different folders.
(and one more to TOTALCMD64.EXE, if you are using a 64-bit OS)
No major change on the UI part, just some minor internal changes and bugfixes.

Yes, the major change is the additional 64-bit version.... or is the same or similar to the current version 7.56a?

Thank you very much for the information. I created another folder for this Beta, and have it copied the entire contents of the version 7.56a. Later in the installation of the Beta version I said is done in this new folder, and the finer settings put in the same folder. So it seems that everything has been fine, with two working versions.
I immediately noticed the high speed of operation of the Beta, since I installed the 64 bit, since my PC has 64-bit Windows 7.

If you mean populate all of the ini settings - even the defaults... then yes, that would be extremely helpful. Then one could compare the newly generated wincmd.ini to your existing one - and easily look for missing settings. Would save a significant amount of time trying to manually create a wincmd.ini - while reading through the help file.
