New Features of TC8 - To Help Us Decide Whether To Test
Is there a description of the new features of TC8?
If we downloaded the new beta it would help to have the new features identified so that we knew what we were looking at, or for.
Hunting around in a haystack for the odd occurrence of something that appears new probably isn't the best use of our expertise.
I've looked for a list but I can't find one. Thx.

All changes are listed in the history file. Most significant are those marked by "Added:" prefix, but "Fixed:" sometimes cause new problems too.

Thirteen pages
Yes, I saw that. Thanks Flint.
The trouble is, the 'what's new' for version 8 is thirteen (13) pages long in a Word document.
It has 54 references to 'Added:'.
It's not the most user-friendly set of text - unless you have extracted the 54 lines plus the relevant 'fixes'. Have you, by any chance?
If so, could you publish those items here? (I don't believe there's a Marketing/Promotions Manager at Ghisler, AG.)

I haven't. Each time a new beta is released, I just spend some time reading the new history section to be in the know. I'm using EmEditor, so I just make a search for "Added" and have all instances highlighted, so that I can first read what matters most, and less significant changes afterwards. I never extracted them explicitly.
You can try TC Changes Viewer tool, it allows highlighting and filtering by the change types.

Thank you for your, somewhat short, reply, Sir Silva.
I take it that you're referring to the Help file within the new TC8 installation; that would mean, of course, that I would have to download and install TC8 (somewhere) and read the Help file, and then decide whether I wanted to test it or not. That seems rather widdershins, to me.
As I say, there's little sign of marketing information, throughout TCxx, and it's such a pity.
1. Where is everyone installing TC8 (do you overwrite vn. 7.56a?).
2. Do you happen to have that list of what's new? It would help to post it here in this thread.
If not, I'll get it, after solving 1.
3. Regarding promotional/marketing information: have you ever seen any list of TC features for, say, new purchasers, saying nothing of long-time users..? I expect I don't know half its capabilities.
'Help' is of little use as an introduction. Little attention has been paid to that. Consider the item on 'Unshare directory', for instance:
It begins 'If Windows for Workgroups or Windows NT 3.51 is installed...'.
PS Thanks Flint. I'm working on the Changes Viewer.

Phred, don't forget that TC8 is still in beta stage, so it is not recommended for wide use, but for testing only.
However, have you read this page? It contains short description of changes in TC versions.

Yes, MVV, I've not forgotten that it's a beta - that's why I put a reference to deciding to test or not in the thread's heading.
I've read that page under your link. A bit there, but not much.
I'm wondering what is so substantial in this release to warrant an integral change to the version number - 7 to 8.
Remember, ultimately, Marketing is the oldest profession.

Re: New Features of TC8 - To Help Us Decide Whether To Test
Hello, Phred.
Hence Total Commander 8.0 beta gets installed to a separate programme folder.
As a rule this will look like this:
+ C:\utils\Totalcmd ... Total Commander 7.56a
+ C:\utils\TC80beta ... latest beta version of T.C. 8
+ C:\utils\TC80prev ... previous beta version of T.C. 8
You do not have to download and install any T.C. 8 beta version in order to get the history.txt. All you have to do is to spot the sticky thread Total Commander 8.0 beta X available (32bit+64bit) at the top of the normal English forum and read it. It will offer you the history file.
There is also a more detailled page listing the most important features of T.C. 7.56a: Here are some features of Total Commander:
In case this is not detailled enough, all right, feel free to get the details from the history.txt file. This should be detailled enough.
With respect to the current Total Commander 8 beta versions:
For the past few weeks there has been one new beta version per week. Creating them will have kept Christian sufficiently busy. Therefore very little time may have been left to maintain a well designed webpage or document which presents the new features to the public in an easy to consume way.
I can assure you that there are a lot of developers out there who cannot even be bothered to publish a weekly updated history.txt and offer it to the public like Christian does.
So in short words, there is plenty of data available to those who really want to find and evaluate it in order to decide whether it is worth giving T.C. 8.0 beta a try or not.
Kind regards,
Karl
Nope, no beta version will ever replace the latest stable version here.1. Where is everyone installing TC8 (do you overwrite vn. 7.56a?).

As has been stated before: You can get all the new features introduced in T.C. 8 beta so far by extracting all lines from history.txt which hold the string Added:.2. Do you happen to have that list of what's new? It would help to post it here in this thread.

The home page does briefly introduce T.C. and its features e.g. with the help of screenshots so that you get an idea what T.C. can do and what it will look like Image gallery of Total Commander with the most important functions.3. Karl, thanks for listing that information about locations, although \utils\.. is a little unusual for a 'user product'. (Does the RTM change?)
Yes, the history file is easy to find, but hunting through Added and Fixed entries is a helluva job. There's only 60 minutes in each hour..
I suppose my subtext is that I'm wanting to make the community aware that sufficient information may - still - NEVER emerge, and TC users will only ever know of 10% of its functionality.
That 'features' page is very interesting. How'd you find that??
(Parallel port function is a bit of a giveaway as to its age, though.)
I disagree with your last sentence: why the integer change from 7 to 8?
Hacker,
I'm trying to be more helpful than you are, I suspect.
Sir_S,
Yes, the huge history.txt file is a beautiful thing.
56 Added's throughout, as discussed.
The whatsnew page is hardly that, surely?

Are you really NOT able to READ the forumPhred wrote:I disagree with your last sentence: why the integer change from 7 to 8?

the change from 7.56a -> 8.0 is because
chris completly transfered the delphi code to lazerus to make a tc64bit...
PS: You might not like might not like the history-file but its common usus to be able to read to see whats new
