Well you never get it right for all people ...

Pick your top 5 of the new features and they will cry "but there are more"
List all items (current 54) and it is "this is way too much to read"

Up to now we just have a beta phase, which may still an object of change (concerning features)
Just wait for the final version, which is usually announced with the main changes.

In the meantime you may follow the history list for each version ... TC Changes Viewer will reduces the lines to your needs.

OMG !!! Clever, very clever. So simple, when you think of it, but I myself wouldn't be able to get it in a thousand years :D

Phred,
I'm trying to be more helpful than you are, I suspect.
Perhaps, perhaps not. :D

Hello, Phred.
information about locations, although \utils\.. is a little unusual for a 'user product'. (Does the RTM change?)
Seems as if my reply to your question
1. Where is everyone installing TC8 (do you overwrite vn. 7.56a?)
was not phrased clearly enough. Obviously I cannot speak for everyone, but just for myself. So I briefly explained what I do. The 3 given foldernames were only meant to illustrate how you can have 3 different T.C. versions in 3 different folders at the same time: the latest stable release v7.56a and 2 beta versions.

I may be slow in the uptake right now, but what does the acronym "RTM" stand for in this context?

Kind regards,
Karl

RTM = Short for release to manufacturing, the version of a software product that is given to manufacturers to bundle into future versions of their hardware products. OR Read the manual, as a variant of RTFM
(I know it also could mean remember the milk...)

I've used my "Right to Manage" to install multiple portable TC installations in several folder like:

C:\Tools\totalcmd\
C:\Tools\totalcmd -8.0\
C:\Tools\totalcmd -7.56a\
C:\Tools\totalcmd -7.55a\
...

Lazerus

Post by *Phred »

Sir Silva,

That's an interesting piece of information regarding the [engine-room] change from Delphi, but I must admit that I haven't seen any other reference to it.
It's not in Christian's general announcement. Where did you find it?
I'll add it to the list of changes if I can assemble a reasonable collection. Would YOU like to?

I understand that regulars are familiar with unformatted whatsnew.txt files, but that doesn't offer much help for general users who might be prepared to test; the betas aren't secret, remember. [no emoticon]

a) its not unformated
b) everytime in the whats new section of the help is a point to history.txt
c) TC is NOT a Tool for general users who are not able to read a history.txt file sorry

BTW I never use separate folders for different TC versions. E.g. I have a folder D:\TOTALCMD, e.g. with TC 8b6. When TC 8b7 was released, I renamed TOTALCMD.exe to TOTALCMD_8b6.exe and placed new TOTALCMD.exe into same folder. So, I'm always using latest version but I'm always can run any older one.

Struggling

Post by *Phred »

Sir S, You missed my question about where you found that item about Lazerus being used. Do you remember?
As for your seeing the process as being good enough, then I would have to say that you appear to be able to offer nothing more to the discussion.
I would like to continue without you.

MVV,
Fair enough, re separate folders.
I notice references in the forum to c:\utils\TC.., C:\Tools\TC.. and D:\TOTALCMD etc..
1. Do you know if it's common NOT to use the C:\Program Files\.. branch for installation of programs?
2. Do you customarily work as administrators, or do you log on as standard users, for
2a. testing, or
2b. everyday work?
This is just a quick aside to my quest for finding out what's new in Vn8.

It's just a suggestion from MS, i don't care since years. Especially for portable installations that do not need a setup.

Most of the time as user with administrator rights (but UAC turned on to the highest level; so the effective rights are comparable to a standard user).
Sometimes as "standard user" for testing.
Very rarely as Administrator.

Me too. I have special folder for apps that doesn't require reinstallation after reinstalling Windows so I can kill everything on my C: drive and don't care about important data.

I work with user's rights (admin account with UAC), and use elevated TC only when I need it.

Are you really that unable to do things on your own?
One search would have brought you to:

Teamviewer

Post by *Phred »

I notice that Teamviewer is moving from version 6.xx to version 7 Beta.

http://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/currentversion.aspx?pid=news.en_tv7_beta

Handy.

I appreciate that Christian is a one-man-band, but he has a lot of gnomes who could help.
