file operations dialog boxes
Hello Everybody
I was wondering if Total Commander saves all the dialog boxes when copying/moving/etc large numbers of files around till the end, or does it interrupt the operation the first time there is an issue? I hate coming back to the computer in a few hours only to find out it stopped at file 10 to ask for some overwrite/some such issue. Does TC have an intelligent way of handling this?
Thank you!

Hello, butecbutecbutec.
Please, open the <F5> - Copy dialog. Then click on [Options >>] and check whether the offered option satisfy your needs.
In case they do not, please, post back and explain what exactly you wish to do and which option that you need that you cannot find.
Kind regards,
Karl

Hello Karl
what I had in mind is "Ask user" but not as soon as issues come up, but save all issues for the end (so that only files with issues are not copied/renamed/etc, all else continues). Sometimes it is difficult to decide in advance what to do (overwrite, skip, etc.), because you wish to see which files have which issues.
Or, at least have the "Ask user" not suspend the operation of other items which do not have issues.
The trouble is sometimes files with issues will come up quickly (so you can wait in front of the progress bar and get it over with soon) but sometimes not, so you never know when it will happen. So it's either you sit it out or you go do something else and hope nothing came up after the first 10 minutes which held up the entire operation for 4 hours, the majority of which could have been completed in the meantime.

Hello, butecbutecbutec.
If you wish to perform an unattended copy operation then the option "Ask user" when the first overwrite situation occurs is not the right choice.
Instead select one of the available explicit overwrite rules:
Drop down the list of predefined rules which should be followed when T.C. comes across overwrite situations.
Cf. the screenshot TC copy options, right screenshot.
In addition decide what T.C. should do in case it cannot read all the source files and / or in case it meets system/hidden files by ticking the approrpiate option(s).
Cf. the screenshot TC copy options, left screenshot.
Finally when performing unattended copy operations you may like to activate the T.C. logging functionality. Go to Configuration => Options => Log File. Tick the option [x] Create a logfile. Accept the default logfile location and name. (%temp%\totalcmd.log).
Untick those actions which you do not want T.C. to log.
Cf the screenshot TC logging options
The logfile will help you determine why T.C. may not have copied all source files and which problems occured, if any.
Kind regards,
Karl

Hello, butecbutecbutec.
The most frequent conflict situation when copying or moving is the case where files from the source folder tree already exist in the target folder tree.
Overwrite options 2 to 8 cover these cases according to your choice. So T.C. will not have to interrupt the operation, to display a confirmation dialogue and to wait for your decision. You have decided before.
You can tick the option to unconditionally overwrite target files, too, which have got the system or hidden attribute set, which are treated with extra care and which without this option ticked would trigger a confirmation dialogue.
Another situation which might occur is that a source file cannot be read (might be locked exclusively by another process e.g.) You can tick the option to skip such files.
In short words you can predefine before starting an operation how T.C. should handle foreseeable conflict situations without interrupting the operation when they occur.
Is this not what your words
Kind regards,
Karl
I am not quite sure what exactly it might be that you are missing, because what you expect seems to be this following your own wordsThose are fine, but I take it then that what I am looking for does not (yet) exist.
The advanced T.C. copy options are meant to avoid precisely the situation whereI was wondering if Total Commander saves all the dialog boxes when copying/moving/etc large numbers of files around till the end
Only if you leave the default option 1. Ask user active, T.C. will display a dialogue and wait for the user to tell it how to proceed as soon as it meets a sitatuation for which it has not been given a rule how to handle it in advance.it interrupts the operation the first time there is an issue

Hello Karl
no that is not implied.
What I am looking for is the Ask User option which completes the process for all non-problematic files first and then Asks the User at the very end for all the problematic files. Not sure how else to explain this.
I am talking about an Ask user, but do not ask as soon as issues come up, but rather only after all non-problematic files have been dealt with. Save issues for the end, then ask user.
No decisions in advance, ask user, but ask when all else is completed.
Hope this helps.

I am not sure I read it here, but here is some ideas. You will see there is much room for improvement.
I cannot post links, so google this: designing-the-windows-8-file-name-collision-experience
What I would like is to save decisions for the end and have all the non-issue files processed in bulk like there were no problematic ones at all.

Hi, butecbutecbutec. That article is mostly about the UI changes, not the functionality itself. But you are right, in some cases Explorer will queue conflicts and show them all at once at the end.
edit:
However I'm not sure if it isn't limited only to file conflicts in copy and move operations.

Hello, butecbutecbutec.
OK. I see. T.C. gives you option to decide in advance. You would like to queue any conflict situations and decide afterwards. You are right, currently T.C. does not support this approach.
Kind regards,
Karl

This feature would help me a lot when putting several files in a queue.
I would appreciate if this would be added!
This feature has been requested several times and I'd like to see it implemented as well. Starting a long-running operation, doing something else in the mean time, only to find it stopped at 1% - that's something I'm dreading every time I do so.
Careful about that. One operation in the queue may depend on results of the previous ones. So unless someone creates a sophisticated algorithm, that would check for such cases, I expect following queued operations to wait until the previous one is successfully finished/resolved.Tex-Hex wrote:This feature would help me a lot when putting several files in a queue.

But it wasn't easy to google or to describe with keywords that are easy to find in the forum.umbra wrote:This feature has been requested several times and I'd like to see it implemented as well.
Sure, users have to be aware of what they are doing! Moving a folder from X to Y and then copying files to X (although already deleted and Copyjob doesn't check whether Directory X exists...).umbra wrote:Careful about that. I suppose most of the users that would love this feature to be implemented are powerusers and they are aware of possible occuring file- and folderconflicts when filling the queue.
Thumbs up for that feature
