ftp auto reconnect instead "Connection lost, reconnect?

Post by *logoly »

I really love the TC and the ftp feature and I don't want to switch back to os native or other software again. But please, kill the "Connection lost, reconnect?" dialog when disconnectec from f t p.

Problem:
a) left panel shows ftp server dir
b) right panel local disc
c) beeing absent for minutes or hours but
d) want to resume my work on the server i.e change directory
e) useless "Connection lost, reconnect?" dialog, click yes

I think there is no user in the world who is like "oh I want to do something on the server, but, no, don't reconnect me to it". If I want to close the connection finally I could double-click on the tab. Or, for the love of god, I am beeing reconnected in vain and then I disconnect manually. Reconnection is not a big deal, it takes only a second. But the dialog drives me crazy since I get it +50 times a day.

Not a solution:
1. Please don't try to inform me about NOOP. I don't want to send LIST or PWD or any NOOP command constantly. I read several articles why this is a bad behavior when not operating on the server for hours.

2. Please don't remind me of this topic beeing asked several times before without pointing to a thread/article with a terminating, satisfying answer.

3. Please don't answer this question with security demands. I am working on my PC and nobody else is here to hijack my session. In fact, that hypothetical user could also click YES on the dialog.

Please just remove this annoying dialog. You couldn't imagine how often you get it when working on several projects all day long. Or please invent a switch for that. I heard about the problem of TC doesn't know that it is disconnected. Ok, but in the moment the dialog appears you know it and you could easily presume a YES click, right? Additionaly you could check for the switch, e.g "[x] Auto reconnect when disconnected?" in the TC settings first.

Couldn't be that hard, or am I wrong? Or have I made a mistake?

Thanks for any reply.
Yours,
logoly

Interesting idea. Imho, auto-reconnecting should NOT be default behavior, but (if you need it) you can enable this in config. It's the only way.
Personally I'm used to this manually when I need, and for me such a question is normal. Even, seeing that over-9000 times per day! It's not so hard to press "Enter" on the default-selected "Yes". As I guess, you switch to TC's window with Alt+Tab? So, there's no problem here.

For example, my situation.
I have ftp-severs with adresses like ftp1.***.***, ftp2.***.***, ftp3.***.***, etc., and in diffrent time some of them are available and some - not (Such a situation is normal with file-sharing hostings that I use for my file-backups, they're just optimising sever's overloads). So, when I upload there some archives (in background only!) I can leave a tab with ftp's root open (or even leave a TC's window as it is) and go away. But, during the transfer server can become overloaded and block any newer connections to it. While file is being uploaded it's connection will not be interrupted anyway, so there's no harm for my transfers. But, if TC will try automatically resume connection every 1/2/5/... minutes (default expire-time on that server), the requests will go to nowhere and only make noise, eating my traffic and transfer speed (can be slow on wireless networks).

i've got the exact same problem as logoly

** it is very annoying to lose the connection every once in a while ** even if it's not so hard to press enter on the default button of the dialog box.

When you're typing as fast as possible trying to get your job done fast this "loosing connection" does get in the way, sometimes causing typos in other windows.

how come filezilla doesn't exhibit this behavior?

I'm already doing this in functions where I can, e.g. during a download or upload. But in many locations it's not possible because the connection loss is detected only somewhere deep within the ftp functions. I do not get a notification when the connection is lost, only an error when actually trying to send a command to the server.

Christian,

you are a capable programmer

i think everyone here is confident you will finally manage to fix this since it's already been done in other software

Here is a solution. The link I am providing is not freeware, because I am too lazy to do the search. However, I know there is a freeware version of this program (written in AutoIT or AHK), because I have used it in the past.

I agree, this would be a very useful improvement.
