Risk to TC / TC's Future

Post by *AKE »

Hello,

Have been an avid TC user for almost 10 years. Not intending to ask a morbid question, but what would be the fate of TC if heaven forbid something were to happen to Christian?

Does anyone know whether Christian has made provisions for the software to continue to be supported / developed?

(I know this isn't open source, and I respect that and am not suggesting otherwise; this is merely curiousity to understand how a passionate developer such as Christian, who has developed such a long running, and enormously successful niche product, views the future.)

Would welcome any author comment! :D

You mean like if he won huge jackpot in lottery? I hope that he would keep working on TC as hobby. :)

But in case of less fortunate events, it would be the end of TC how we know it, that's for sure. Well, IMHO. But it's the usual way how these one-man projects work.
One scenario is no future updates and gradual transition into obsolescence. A little more likely seems acquisition by someone else. But I don't believe that anyone could continue developing it in exactly same way. I mean, just to get used to source code which evolved from Turbo Pascal, over Delphi, now with Free Pascal/Lazarus mixed in, with tons of custom solutions for I'd guess basically everything, ... And then there's the whole development direction, it's hard to tell if anyone else would keep it. The end result wouldn't necessarily have to be bad, but it would be different.

TC is the hobby of Christian.

Actually it was my hobby, and is my job now. We are actually a 2 person company, so TC wouldn't be cancelled even if I would disappear. Btw, I'm not participating in any lotteries. :)

I asked myself the same question several times, but I considered too morbid to post it here in the forum :)

Delighted to hear that TC's future is assured! It is really a product without peer. (BTW -- many thanks for your generous policy on updates not requiring purchase of additional licenses. If you ever decide to put a 'donation' page on your site...)

Thanks on behalf of everyone who uses TC and couldn't get along without it.
