Problem copying a high number of files, TC exits

Post by *gpujol »

Hi,

First of all, thanks many times for such a reliable program that I've been using for almost 20 years. Thank you, Christian.

I have recently downloaded and installed version 8.01 32-bit on Windows XP Professional.

When copying several thousand files (I've been doing this for many years for backup purposes) at some point in the copy process (between 75 and 80%) TC just exits, the way a program does when there is an AV inside a thread.

This NEVER happened to me before with TC.

I had the following discrepancies between the source and target directories after exit (of course, the program did not finish executing):

Source:

683,386 files in 58,979 directories

Target:

666,003 files in 57,634 directories

I use most default parameters for copy:

- "Use default method"
- "Copy date/time of directories"
- "F8/Del deletes to recycle bin"

As a precaution I'm back to version 7.04

Kind regards and happy holidays,

Problem copying a high number of files, TC exits

Update:

Tried a subset of the previous batch with TC version 7.04 and the following results:

Source

564,154 files in 51,969 directories

Target

564,154 files in 51,967 directories

All files copied. Two empty subdirectories not copied (path name too long), but this was expected.

How are your system specs? I've seen TC use quite a significant amount of RAM for Copy/Delete operations that deal with thousands of files (500MB and more) -- which is released when the operation completes.
*BLINK* TC9 Added WM_COPYDATA and WM_USER queries for scripting.

This doesn't explain why it would just disappear - that's definitely not normal, because TC is catching all exceptions to show the error to the user.

The hardware used on the two pcs where these operations took place has not changed in quite a while.

And going back to version 7.04 eliminated the problem.

Did you use the official download from www.ghisler.com? I haven't received a single similar report so far...

Hi Christian,

I've been away for several days, sorry for not responding.

I;m not sure if I downloaded from the official site or one of the alternates.

Size is 3,453,024.

I asked because you may have a version with many preinstalled plugins, like the "TC Ultima Prime" distribution. One of these plugins may be causing the crash.

Please check in Configuration - Options - Plugins which plugins you have installed.

Reinstalled version 8.01 32 bit (2012-08-03)

It does not add any plugin.

Could you check whether the signature of totalcmd.exe is correct? Just press Alt+Enter on totalcmd.exe, then go to the tab "Digital signatures" and check whether it is from Ghisler Software GmbH and without an error.

Seems to be unchanged. Did you recently add new memory chips (RAM) to that PC?

I believe I've found what caused the problem with Total Commander 8.1 and copying many NESTED directories:

One of the subdirectory trees included in the copy had a deeply recursed java class directory which only now I've been able to remove by using Microsoft's robocopy utility.

This directory tree (I cannot be sure if it was generated by JBuilder or Netbeans) had a depth way beyond what Windows accepts, so it couldn't be deleted either by Windows Explorer or Total Commander.

However, the same operation -including the deeply nested tree- was successfully completed by Total Commander 7.

I hope this find helps.

George Pujol
