F7 - new folder/file

Post by *robertmo »

suggestion 1:

Would it be possible to extend F7 function to also making new files?

When you press F7 there would be a second drop down menu to choose a folder (default) or file type.

Current way of doing it (right click -> new -> choice) is not handy most of the times cause you have to go to the end of the list and right click a tiny piece of commander below last file (if you have more folder/files on the commander screen than the window can display and that happens in most cases ;) ).

-----------------------

suggestion 2:

Other request would be to make that tiny bit of clickable screen always visible at the end when you move to the end. Right now it is possible to set the window size the way that it is not visible at all - hence right click function is not available at all. May be hard to figure out for new users (or users who haven't used that feature previously). I remember i had problems with that in the past many times - i recalled i could do it but couldn't figure out where to click (tried clicking on double dots, empty space on the right side of the file name etc.)

Is it hard to press Shift+F4 to create new file?

You can do right-click onto path bar above file panels.

this solved one more problem:
this allows drag and drop too

but revealed a possible bug or missing feature:
i can left click drag and drop on path bar above file panels or tabs,
but cannot right click drag and drop on path bar above file panels nor tabs.

So if that is a missing feature my suggestion is to make that possible.

I also noticed that even left drag and drop doesn't work if you drag from the desktop or even from other total commander window(program)

TC doesn't support right button d-n-d. But you may hold right button while dragging by left one in order to move files (start drag with LMB, hold RMB - cursor will change its shape - and then release LMB for drop and then release RMB).

If you need to drop files from other program, you can drop them onto any file in panel (if you drop onto a folder, TC will try to drop into it), also you can drop files onto panel scrollbar.

MVV,
TC doesn't support right button d-n-d.
It does. Just hold Shift before starting to drag.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

After starting. And only after.
But here we're talking about drag and drop with popup menu containing list of possible drop actions.

Yes, the same. What other actions from popup menu do you need except copy and move?

Before. Holding it after causes the files to be moved. Holding it before opens drag and drop context menu after releasing the right mouse button.

Everything is ok, don't need anything more.
Just from the user point of view the missing behavior is somewhat strange and unnecessary complicated but I guess there is some reason for that otherwise it wouldn't be like that. I guess that implementation is either too hard or too complicated so it is not worth bothering with that while there more important problems to solve. As for me you don't have to change anything. It is not a problem when you already know that all. But for new users it is not very user friendly -> more questions on forum ;)

Hacker,
You're right, Shift must be held before starting a drag with RMB. BTW there is a bug (caused by action ambiguity): if you hold Shift and then hold RMB when mouse is above some file, TC switches selection for that file.
I've thought you was talking about drag with LMB - in that case Shift must be held after starting a drag.

dragging with RMB doesn't need shift (at least shift is not used here for anything so it doesn't matter whether you keep shift pressed or not -> you can also keep capslock or numlock pressed - it doesn't change anything)

selection it always turned on for files you are dragging

dragging with LMB can be done with shift pressed before or after - it doesn't matter.
