Please scroll down to the bottom to see the latest installation description. With luck, this will be a work in progress, beyond this post.
This analysis may well apply to earlier versions, but they may not be thoroughly tested against this instruction set.
It's highly likely that there will be errors, bumps and crashes in what's described here - I'll bet I don't fully understand the process and all its nuances - but there doesn't appear to be any other source. I hope it will be refined as it goes. Please contribute.
There's no obvious reference to installation in the wiki, so this may be a candidate for inclusion there.
I. Installation (synonymous with 'setup') to Program Files, indeed, to the root, \ , folder, requires administrative credentials. Since we're not all administrators, you may be prompted for an administrator's, any administrator's, password, and perhaps even an administrator's name, although that may well be included in the prompt that appears.
a. For people operating as an administrator, assuming User Account Control hasn't been altered, a confirmation prompt will appear for approval.
II. Installation can be made from a running TC. The running instance will be detected and a request to allow closure of that instance will be issued. It must be approved, otherwise installation will not be able to proceed.
III. If TC is already installed, installation's first screen will ask you whether you want to install this version to the location it cites, e.g. C:\Program Files\Total Commander, or C:\totcmdr.
a. Accepting this option means that installation will take place immediately, 'over the top' of the current installation, adopting all the existing settings, Button Bar buttons, and plugins.
IV. Alternatively to III, you may choose to 'Install normally' - meaning that installation will proceed as if this is the first time TC is being installed on this computer - whether or not it is the first time.
a. This option will lead to a sequence of questions determining your basic preferences.
These will be described below.

Errm, sorry. Nearly all of what you describe - one just sees when actually doing an installation, ie. the installer already is quite self-explaining.
So, if at all something like what you suggest is really necessary, it should explain rather than long windedly describe what the users experiences anyway, IMHO.
