You can use a different icon for archive files by using a different file list icon library:
http://ghisler.ch/wiki/index.php/Filelist_icons#File-specific_icons

As far as I know there is no way to get extension-specific icons for archive files - not even with internal associations.

TC Icons can be replaced by other icons by using the param IconLib under the [Configuration] paragrapg in the wincmd.ini

To have the archive icon replaced by Windows XP's zip icon you can download this file: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/totalcmd.icl - place it in your TC program folder and add this line to the [Configuration] section of your wincmd.ini file: IconLib=%COMMANDER_PATH%\totalcmd.icl
