Directory Sync Compare Time

Post by *rdp2009 »

Hi Guys,

Ok I am syncing about 1.6 TB of data using directory sync. Is there a log or something that I can look at that will tell me how long the compare process takes before it finishes? Currently I just start the compare process then I try and check back every so often to see if its done. The compare was started at 1:15PM and I checked it up until 4:00PM and wasnt able to check it until 8:00PM so it finished sometime between 4PM and 8PM. I would like to know how long it takes so i can give an estimate to the team that has to take the source share offline while I sync the data for cutover.

I looked for logs and I dont see any times once it completes the compare. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Since there aren't any good suggestions yet, here are a couple of not-so-good suggestions:

. Make sure that no other applications are running. Open the task manager and use the low update speed. Note the amount of CPU time consumed by Total Commander during a long interval, and the corresponding elapsed real time. After the comparison is done, use the total CPU time consumed by Total Commander to estimate the elapsed real time for the entire comparison.

. Use a web camera to photograph your screen at a specified interval.

I think CPU usage is not a problem for sync tool at all, HDD speed is the factor. Ammount of elapsed/total bytes of data together with elapsed time would allow estimating total time.

In case of copying after comparing it is easy: TC shows both values in sync copy dialog in its lower right corner.

But when TC reads directories and compares them, it can't know how much files they contain and how much differences will be found so it is very hard to estimate total compare time. However in case of compare by contents status bar of sync dialog shows elapsed and total ammounts of bytes (after reading directories and determining files to be compared), so these values may be useful.

On classical HDDs it is true, but not on SSDs.
We are not so S.M.A.R.T. as we imagine...
