Ways to changing a File Name - how-to?

Post by *patetcmi »

Is it possible to change the name of a file, or directory, directly from the main menu without going into the multi-rename feature?

From default main menu no, only after edit/load custom menu.
But you can do it from:
function keys (on bottom of TC if you don't disable it)
or
shortcut key - Shift+F6 (or F6).

Hello, Pat.

The Total Commander default menus does not hold the item "rename file/folder". Just like it does not hold items for the operations
"View", "Edit", "Copy", "Move/Rename", "Mkdir", "Delete".

Why?
All these extremely frequent actions can be performed by pressing one of the keys displayed in the function key bar at the bottom of the application bar.
The function key bar offers [F6 Move]. The "move" and the "rename" operation are related very closely.

If you press <Shift><F6> on an object, filename or foldername, you get an inline edit box which allows you to rename the object.
If you perform a long left click on an object, filename or foldername, you get the same inline edit box which allows you to rename the object.

So there are 2 very simple ways of renaming a single file / a single folder. Selecting the same operation from the menu would require more steps, more keypresses or more mouseclicks.

Kind regards,
Karl

... or if you prefer to do it by mouse: just click once on the filename, wait 2 seconds and click once more on it.
Now you can edit the name.
Just press Enter or click on the hook on the right side of the edit field to finalize it.

TC can change the name directly from the default main menu:

Files => Properties...

Yes, it is Window properties dialog box, but it called from TC menu, and it also can change the name of a file or directory.

Thank You!
The shortcut key works great and it was just what I was looking for!
