Quick search via (Ctrl+)Alt+Letter vs. Ctrl+S

Post by *d125q »

Hello guys,

I began using Total Commander quite recently and am absolutely in love with it. I would like to ask if there is any difference between the quick search / quick filter panels opened by (Ctrl+)Alt+Letter (depending on how TC is configured) and the one opened by Ctrl+S.

The only difference I can tell is that (Ctrl+)Alt+Letter automatically inserts "Letter," while Ctrl+S does not do anything of that sort. However, is there any difference in functionality?

Best regards.

There are multiple ways of displaying quick search/filter window where you can type filter text.
E.g. Ctrl+S opens this window and automatically enables filtering, [Ctrl+]Alt+Letter works like in old good Norton Commander and just opens that window and inserts pressed letter w/o changing filtering option (you should think about it this way: you press [Ctrl+]Alt and then type letters to be used as filter).
You can also assign any other hotkey for cm_ShowQuickSearch command and it will work like [Ctrl+]Alt+Letter but w/o typing any letters.
So, there are no functionality differences between all these ways, these are just ways to open same window with different initial states, and you can erase/type letters and switch filter option within window itself.

Indeed; so the filter works the same regardless of whether it was opened via (Ctrl+)Alt+Letter, Ctrl+S or any binding I have set to invoke cm_ShowQuickSearch, right?

Thanks a lot!

Filter works when its button is pressed in quick search window. But if Ctrl+S always enables filter even if it was disabled, [Ctrl+]Alt+Letter or cm_ShowQuickSearch keep its previous state.

That might come in handy in the future! Again, thank you for the quick response!

Another intersting shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S: It opens the quick filter with the last used filter string.
