Multi rename tool: how can I "browse" history item

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Multi rename tool: how can I "browse" history item

Post by *zbuzanic »

In rename mask: filename, how can I "browse" history items? PGup/PGdn works but goes from end to end, so I'd like arrow UP/DOWNkeys to work so I can use previous items.

Sometimes I'm not using mouse at all so I need this.

You can use Alt+Down to open up the list (this works on all standard Windows comboboxes) und then use Up/Down to choose an item from the list.

However, I'm wondering why Up/Down doesn't work on this specific combobox... I guess this is done on purpose to prevent the deletion of user's inputs caused by the selection of an item from the history by mistake (i.e. press Up/Down after you made some changes to the file name and *bam* all your recent input is lost because you selected an item from the history).

Yes, this is blocked on purpose because people complained that they entered complex rename strings, and lost them when accidentally hitting the arrow keys.

ghisler,
There are other places too where input may be lost... Select files dialog, only files of this type field etc.

Today I did it again. Another location is create directory window. When I enter new name, sometimes I use arrow keys to move cursor and accidentally press wrong arrows (Up/Down instead of Left/Right)... and this causes all my typing to get lost.
