Single click action for file and tree windows

Post by *pmennen »

I suspect there is lots of debate about tree views since people seem to either love them or hate them. Put me in the love them column and I even have to have a tree for both my upper and lower panes - so I appreciate that TC can do this. However what I would prefer that the file list to the right of the tree always show the contents of the folder that is highlighted (in Red) in the tree view. i.e. changing the highlighted folder in the tree (by single clicking on the folder or using the up/down arrows to select a new folder) would automatically update the file view. Right now the file view does not update unless I double click on the tree. This might be a useful mode for many, but I prefer the single click mode (which is similar to the tree view in the standard windows explorer). Is there a way to choose that mode?

In the file view it appears that there are two types of selections. Single clicking puts an outline around the file name, where as pressing the insert key highlights the file using a red font (at least in my particular color scheme). Some actions appear to depend on one or another of these "selection" modes. While this is workable, I found it confusing at first and it didn't seem to be well explained in the help file. Also it is hard for me to see the advantage of the extra complication. The standard windows explorer only has one type of select (which you can also use to select multiple files with control or shift click to select individual files or ranges) and this single style select seems sufficient to me. Is there a mode in TC to make it behave more like the windows file explorer in this regard.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not a fan of the windows file explorer. In fact I hate it. However for the two points I mentioned above I prefer the method used by the windows file explorer.

F1-Help,4.b. wincmd.ini wrote:Autotreechange=0 If set to 1, a single click on a directory in tree view switches to that directory in the other window.
Edit ("Configuration -> Change Settings Files directly...") your wincmd.ini and edit or add a line:
Autotreechange=1

Thanks Holger. That's fantastic. That was finally the last setting I needed to make TC feel comfortable to me. Thanks for your help. I didn't realize there were some settings in the ini file that were not also in the menus. I also noticed also that I had "OldStyleTree=1". I experimented setting this to zero. I suspect it does something different, although I couldn't see the difference.

Still interested to see if anyone has anything to say about my comments on the two types of file selections.

Thanks

pmennen,

Actions are performed on the selected (red) files. If no file is selected, the actions are performed on the file under the cursor.
As for the advantages - for instance you can examine files using Ctrl-Q and add to a selection as necessary using Insert without fear of losing your selection upon clicking on another file.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

If you are interested in TC you should read the History.txt where you can find some nifty things.
Also there is a whole section in the TC help about possible settings in INI file.
