Folder share from within TC doesn't work for me.

Post by *whytea »

I have noticed this issue a while back. Not sure if it has been discussed before. Although you can right click and share a folder on TotalCmd, while everything appears to be going through, it never works. But the same steps on Windows Explorer works just fine.

Not a big issue, just a small annoyance :)

It works for me (Windows 7 x64). Can you give me more details of what you are doing, and the TC and Windows versions?

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (server)
TotalCmd: 8.51a

Used to run Win2K3 on the same machine and share never worked there too.

The strange thing is everything appears to be OK, even the shared folder icon is changed with a hand on it. Yet, there is no way to connect to it. Repeating the same steps with Windows Explorer always fixes the problem.

Which steps?
- Context menu "Share with" ...?
- Context menu "Properties"-> "Sharing" --> [Share] ...?
- Context menu "Properties"-> "Sharing" --> [Advanced Share] ...?
TotalCmd: 8.51a
- x64 or x86?
- Running "as administrator"?
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (server)
- Domain member inside a corporate network?
- Homegroup?
- Workgroup?

Means what exactly? Is the share available? What does

Code: Select all

net share
say, i.e. does it list the share you just made in TC? What are the NTFS permissions set to? Do you use "simple file sharing" (everyone connects as Guest) or do you log on using normal credentials (everyone connects with a specific account)?

[YT]
- allow a folder to be shared on the server via context menu
- go to a desktop (client PC) to use TotalCmd's Net/Network Connections.... Doesn't work.

Is the share available? What does

Code: Select all

net share
say, i.e. does it list the share you just made in TC?
[YT] Didn't check.

What are the NTFS permissions set to?
[YT] No idea.

[YT] No idea

Dalai, not trying to sound ungrateful, but the bottom line is identical steps were carried out on both TotalCmd and Windows Commander and one worked and one failed to work. Does it matter about the NTFS permissions and file sharing options?

Maybe you are running one with higher user rights (As Administrator)?

And what does "doesn't work" mean? Which error do you get?

Didn't check.
Then you should do that.
Do you use "simple file sharing" (everyone connects as Guest) or do you log on using normal credentials (everyone connects with a specific account)?
No idea
Then you should check for that in Control Panel > Folder options > Tab View > Use simple file sharing (roughly translated from a German system). This setting is called "Use sharing wizard" on Win7.

Of course it is. Explorer is known to change NTFS permissions without the user knowing about it when creating a share or accessing restricted directories (it asks the user for confirmation in the latter case if you have administrative privileges, though).
