Open a file directly on FTP based on file associations

Post by *Orion »

When connected to an FTP-server, one can use F3 to view the text of file. A temporary copy of the file is automatically created by a download and the view function is then applied to the temp file.

It would be nice if you could just double-click or press Enter on other types of files than text and similarly have a temporary copy of the file downloaded and the appropriate application opening it based on file association. Thus you would be able to easily see the contents of a PDF file or view a JPG.

Does anybody know if there is a way to achieve this?

If you have some Universal viewer like ULister installed
you can just view almost any file type
and there is no need to execute an application.

Personally I'd like to have this feature as well. Something like ULister falls short for me.

There is of course the various lister plugins.

However, I was so focused on the internal Total Commander viewer, which has fantastic performance for text files, that I forgot about the external viewer. If you go to Configuration - Options - Operation - Edit/View, there is in fact an "Associations" button through which you can associate various file types with certain applications, e.g. Foxit PDF reader for PDF files.

This works fine so that a PDF file on the FTP server can be opened directly by pressing Alt-F3, if the internal viewer is kept as F3. I can live with having to press Alt-F3 rather than double-click / Enter.

Again, if one has to regularly view many different types of files, one the various viewer plugins may be a better solution. The Ulister looks awesome.
