Permanent Selections (tagging/untagging files to work with)

Post by *CopyCats »

I would love a simple feature that lets you select files quasi-permanently by tagging them in the file listing.

When you tag a file, it simply gets a bright 'v'-mark over its icon (or its name is shown blinking, etc). When you are done tagging files, you can press a key to Select all tagged files, and then you can perform any regular action with them, e.g. copy or delete them.

The 'Mark' menu could have these additional commands:
  • Tag
    Untag
    Select Tagged
(additionally, a command to clear all tags from all tabs could be considered)

Ideally, the tagged files in each tab would be remembered when you switch folders as well as between sessions.
Tags would not be copied or moved along with the files (or, these features could be optional).

It would be nice if the current 'click-icon-to-select' method would be changed into 'click-icon-to-Tag'.
It would also be nice if 'Tagged' could be used as an internal file property, for instance in advanced searches.

The benefit of these quasi-permanent selections would be that you can continue to view, compare or otherwise examine your files without losing your selection. I've seen and used a similar feature in a photo manager and in CAD software and it makes many tasks much simpler.

I am aware that I could use Comments (descript.ion) as a workaround, but I don't find it very convenient.

You can do that with the Bookmarks function of the TC plugin TWinKey.
It allows to make selections from bookmarks.

Thanks kindly for the pointer, Horst! However, this is a suggestion for implementation in Total Commander itself. I think it would be useful for a large section of users.
